When I left the ground last night I bumped in to some Sunderland fans, reasonable chaps - and weirdly they were absolutely gagging for recognition... "We were good though weren't we" , "Are we the best side you've played" , "I think we deserved at least a draw didn't we" Said no, Stoke were better, weren't even worried, weren't even loud, we weren't even trying and it was another walk in the park. We could* potentially be on 30 points after Stoke on Saturday having played 11 games, here's the amount of games it took the 3rd team to cross the 30 points threshold in the last 10 seasons; 17, 16, 16, 16, 17, 15,17, 15,17, 14 (Average: 16) So if* we do hit 30 on Saturday, then on average we've got a 5 game margin for error after only 11 played (Over 20 games margin for error over an entire season to get promoted automatically) Obviously it's all absolute bollocks but I love working out the best case scenario

I disagree, saying that football is a human game therefore nothing is remotely predictable & you can't possibly say one run of fixtures is easier than another is ridiculous. Each individual team's form can vary on any given matchday, so anybody COULD win any game, however it gives a huge indication on how easy or difficult your upcoming run of games will be. Playing against 6 teams in a row that are averaging 0.8 - 1.1 points per game is definitely & undeniably easier than playing 6 teams in a row that are averaging 2.0 - 2.4. It's not saying, these next 6 opponents average less points per game than us therefore we will definitely beat them all, it's saying ALL 6 opponents are struggling to pick up points therefore it's easier to take more points off them. "Or a star player might depart. A change of manager. All things will factor how hard any given fixture will be." The PPG stats in the post that you've replied to would be even more meaningful in these situations, you can literally check whether a team is picking up more points on average before or after any given event, whether they're better home or away, whether they pick up more points against good teams or bad teams etc. - some stats are completely meaningless but these ones are genuinely useful.

No problem, it's a really good website, I've just been flicking through - There's an option to bring up a form table (Last 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 matches), it shows how many you've won, lost etc. like a normal table but also the points per game of the opponents you've faced in that time period. For example, we've got the same 4 game form as Cardiff, but played against much more difficult opponents. Sorry to piggy back on your post anyway, it just fitted in nicely with the point you were making !

Found this table quite interesting, obviously it'll start to even out as we approach the halfway mark and become less meaningful. I like the "Next 4 opponents" bit too, ours was like 2.4 or similar yesterday before we played Norwich. The only thing is that this table splits it into home & away PPG depending on where the fixtures are, for example if somebody played us at home we'd be counted as 3.0 PPG rather than our actual 2.57, not sure if this is more accurate or not.

I always think that 12 games in is a good indication of how good each team actually is. Probably worth mentioning that many teams have had a great start over 6 to 8ish games but pretty much all of them fall off that pace by the 12th game: Now, I'm not for one minute saying they wont keep up this form, HOWEVER... I'm not commenting on the list but scrolling down I've seen Lloyd Dyer's name mentioned 3 times and I couldn't scroll past without saying what an absolute delight it was having that man at our club. One of my favourite ever players regardless of era, club status at the time etc. I absolutely LOVED the bloke and was gutted that he chose the 3 year contract elsewhere rather than a year or two in the Prem with us (Although I understood his reasons). We were incredible that year and Dyer suited that team so well, ahh man I've barely thought about it for years but I'm off to Youtube his greatest hits! I know it's only small but I'm a big fan of the way he talks about other clubs... Norwich? “They are a very good team. They have different ways to play. We’re going to try to be ourselves on and off the ball and try to get some points there.” You can tell he's A) Genuinely respectful of them B) Intrigued by the way they play & C) Wants to pick it apart and beat them I think at least in the last season with Brendan he lost that level of respect for the opposition & thought we were good enough in general to compete with most of the league, which we weren't & it's nice to have that back. This has been one of my favourite starts to a season in a while, genuine enjoyment with a manager that wants us to be better, fitter, stronger & more intelligent than everyone we face, go on the boys!
