  5. I nearly posted similarly a few weeks ago, we left the train station through the taxi entrance and our first sight was a couple of policemen moving on a group of homeless people from the doorway of Tesco. We only had to walk as far as De Montfort Street, but London Road looked more run down than I remembered it. My husband said it was the first time he'd ever felt nervous in Leicester, we lived there until 2020 but hadn't been back until this year.
  6. This reminds me of when Athena opened in the Newborough Centre in Kettering, as it was named then, and the hours my friends and I would spend looking through the posters there. It felt like a step up from the ones in HMV
  7. Snap. I don't really use it unless it absolutely cannot be misunderstood. I also wish we had a different emoji for when 'liking' something isn't really appropriate, but none of the others cover it too. Maybe like the FB caring one, or the heart. I can't think of a specific example off the top of my head, but countless times I'd like to react to a post but none of the current emojis seem to fit.

  11. Get yourself a decent IPTV provider and you will have access to everything you can imagine through your Firestick with no subscription fees
  12. I need to close Ellis' mobile phone account with Vodafone and I just can't do it, every time I've tried I just break down at the questions on the form. Date of birth and date of death, they're just too close together and it's heatbreaking. They need me to upload the death certificate and I don't want to even look at it, never mind share it with anyone. My ex husband is being a complete cvnt, so much so that I've blocked him from contacting me. He didn't really include me in the funeral arrangements, anything I suggested was vetoed, he made all the decisions and in the end I didn't go. He won't let me have Ellis' ashes, but wants me to pay for half of the funeral bill. That probably sounds petty, but there's a long history of animosity between us that I won't bore you all with, and it doesn't help that I strongly believe he is at least partly to blame for the decision Ellis made to take his life, although I haven't expressed that to his dad. My daughter is struggling more than I realised so I feel like even more of a failure as a mother, she won't talk to me because I can't talk without crying and she doesn't want to upset me even though I've told her it's fine and that is what I'm here for. I hadn't spoken to my mum for about 3 years until I rang her to tell her the news, her choice not mine, within 2 minutes she was telling me about all her ailments and in the end I cut her short, I was calling her to tell her I'd lost my youngest son and she just turned the conversation around to herself. She hasn't contacted me since. It's funny how some days can start reasonably well, and I feel like I'm ok, and then they just end unbearably shit
  13. We have finally decided to step in to the world of cruise ships, a clear sign we are getting older if ever there was one. A week in November around the Canaries and Madeira. We have a cabin at the front of the ship, is this a mistake? Neither of us suffers with seasickness, at least not on other boats we've been on, but I'm aware we will feel more of the ship's movement at the front. @FoyleFox I'm thinking of you really, as the seasoned cruiser (!) amongst us Also if anyone has any tips particularly for Madeira and La Gomera I'd love to hear them, only one day in each, obvs.

  15. I asked my daughter about this just the other day, apparently it's because their calf muscles don't fit comfortably inside the socks without the holes
  16. It's probably also worth mentioning that a generation or so ago the woman was at home all day and had time to shop at different places to source the freshest and cheapest ingredients, and to then cook the evening meal. Since I had my children I needed to work, so time is precious in the evenings and many people turn to frozen or fast food out of necessity to get a meal on the table in the time they have. The slow cooker is the working family's best friend, I couldn't have managed without mine when I was working with small children, but lots of people still have the misconception that they are only good for casseroles, which just isn't the case
  17. Yes it's pretty awful when you realise this is a big cost to people who can't afford it, but so many people haven't got the spare money to cover the hike in energy prices when literally every penny was already accounted for
  18. Seriously? Plenty of people were looking for alternatives to their oven throughout the energy crisis, many people couldn't afford their energy bills and were going without https://www.theguardian.com/business/2022/apr/26/we-stopped-using-the-oven-as-price-went-up-how-rise-in-energy-bills-is-hitting-uk-homes
