Consensus from Saints fans seems to be that he speaks well and is a likeable bloke - but this won't mean anything if he's out of his depth. But if you actually watched Saints last season, or the one before, where they nearly bottled promotion, you’ll know. It’s the worst kind of football imaginable. Yes, the squad was shit, but the style made it even worse. Endless ****ing about at the back to pad possession stats, extremely low xG and attempts on goal, and somehow they managed to rack up 20 defensive errors leading to goals - mind you, that's in just a third of the season. Words genuinely fail to capture how shit of an appointment this is.

Disastrous if we’re getting Russell Martin. Southampton set a PL record for defensive errors leading to a goal before the season was even halfway through. All that possession, and nothing to show for it but sideways passes and calamity at the back.
