To me, it sounds similar to the Romero red card against Man U a couple of weeks ago. Full intent to go for the ball, late, excess force sees him off. Romero was also then lambasted in the media, a reputation which proceeds him.
Casually flicking through YouTube shorts last week, a clip of Ronaldo came up from the official Premier League account titled "Carnage! Cristiano Ronaldo clattering in.", from a time where out of frustration, CR7 would routinely kick at floored players, and in this aforementioned videos case, ran into a loose 50/50 ball, absolutely steaming in with rage and flung his leg in the general direction of the ball with absurd force... but don't worry this was all fun and games apparently. Just like the various videos from official football accounts from SkySports and the Premier League which show clips of times when Roy Keane would be sent off, jovial comments in the chat "our Roy", "legend", then videos of him watching these clips laughing about the times he maimed fellow professionals and now it's all seen as relatable friendly characters in the media... Carragher hocking up greenies to gob at kids on the motorway.
I've randomly gone on abit of a rant here. Anyway yeah, see it often. Players earn reputations, like Choudhury did against Liverpool for daring to tackle Salah with vigor, yet Tyler Morton suffered no ill press for snapping someone's leg.
Felt Romero got it a little harsh the other week was my original point
