  5. Leicester Memories Mervin Wallace · It might come as a surprise to learn a couple of things about the wartime Avro Lancaster Bomber. Firstly, many were made locally at Armstrong Whitworth in Bitteswell, Leicestershire. And secondly the launch of Leicester's ambitious Lancaster Fund in 1943. An appropriately named target board was erected outside the town hall showing the German cities of Essen, Hanover and Berlin. A Lancaster outline was added every time sufficient money had been collected to acquire an example. The purchase of 100 bombers was given as £2,097,678 - in present day values around £160 million - and it was achieved. Ventures like this were run all over the UK and the Commonwealth. David Stretton I've seen the cost of a Lancaster costing between 42,000 and 50,000 pounds in 1944 values. 7,377 were built of which 3,736 were lost in accidents or on operations. The current British fast jet, the Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II, cost about 85 million pounds each.
  6. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cdxy1kp73y9o Louise Haigh has resigned as transport secretary after it emerged she pleaded guilty to a fraud offence a decade ago. She has admitted telling police in 2013 she had lost her work mobile phone in a mugging, but later found it had not been taken. She was given a conditional discharge by magistrates, following the incident which happened before she became an MP. Haigh's is the first resignation from Sir Keir Starmer's government and the 37-year-old said her appointment as the “youngest ever” female cabinet member “remains one of the proudest achievements of my life”. However, it raises questions over the prime minister's judgement in appointing someone with a spent conviction to his cabinet, having previously attacked the Conservatives during Partygate, saying "lawbreakers can't be lawmakers". At the time of the offence, Haigh was working as a public policy manager for insurance company Aviva. Following reports by Sky and The Times on Thursday, Haigh issued a statement, saying she reported a "terrifying" mugging in London to police. She said she reported the phone as one of a number of items she believed had been stolen, and was issued with a new work phone. Some time later, she added, she had discovered the handset was still in her house and she switched it on, which "triggered police attention" leading to her being called in for questioning.
  7. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/teams/leicester-city Reputations are on the line at Leicester published at 07:55 07:55 Nick Mashiter BBC Sport football news reporter Jon Rudkin and Susan Whelan Image source,Getty Images Ruud van Nistelrooy's imminent, expected, arrival at Leicester City ushers in another new era at King Power Stadium. The former Manchester United striker will be the Foxes' fourth manager in 19 months - and the club need to get it right. Reputations and roles will, and should, be on the line following the decision to axe Steve Cooper. Director of football Jon Rudkin and chief executive Susan Whelan have come under fire from fans over the years and will further be in the spotlight as Van Nistelrooy's reign begins. They did not speak to the media when Leicester were winning the Premier League and reaching the Champions League quarter finals, so there is at least consistency when they do not open up when the Foxes have been struggling. But the context to the thought process is important. Criticism will be levelled at the club and knowing the whys and the hows ensures the much-needed understanding. Without it, the criticism may lack the important nuance needed to gauge why the club have made the calls they have. There are also decisions to be made about those who joined during Cooper's time at the club. Ben Dawson, first-team development coach, left Newcastle United for Leicester in July and has been in charge since Cooper's dismissal on Sunday. He will face the media at Seagrave on Friday morning with it expected to be just a matter of time before Van Nistelrooy is confirmed. Dawson and fellow coach Andrew Hughes left secure roles to move to Leicester, Hughes joining from Norwich City, and their positions may now be uncertain with Van Nistelrooy's impending appointment.

Built in 1911, it stands on a rocky islet known as Ar-Gazec, where the raging waves of the ocean crash with force during storms. This lighthouse became famous thanks to an iconic photograph by Jean Guichard, who captured a monumental wave enveloping the structure while the lighthouse remained in the gate. Its location, on one of the most dangerous sea passages, symbolizes human resistance to the power of nature. credits: Flash curiosidades #didyouknow #didyouknowfacts #DidYouKnow

Cooper was sacked by the Foxes last weekend, who have been working hard to find his replacement. Now, as revealed on Wednesday, Ruud van Nistelrooy is close to becoming the new Leicester manager and could be in charge of the Foxes this weekend for their trip against Brentford. Leicester cancel press conference ahead of Brentford fixture As is customary every weekend, Premier League clubs’ managers will be speaking to the media ahead of the upcoming fixtures. However, sources close to Leicester City News have revealed that the Foxes have cancelled their traditional Thursday press conference slot. While a reason hasn’t been disclosed it’s believed that the club are waiting to officially announce Van Nistelrooy before allowing him to speak to the press. When will the Leicester press conference take place? As per Premier League rules, Leicester will be required to speak to the media before this weekend’s game – regardless of whether or not Van Nistelrooy is appointed. If he isn’t in place to speak to the press, one of the trio of coaches in charge will be the most likely to take the presser. The press conference is expected to take place no later than 1:30 PM GMT on Friday 29 November, during which there will be an embargoed section where anything discussed can’t be published until after 10:30 PM GMT.
  19. According to Martin O'Neill probably. Leicester City icon says Ruud van Nistelrooy must overcome club's 'sense of entitlement' Managers have struggled to win total backing from the stands at the King Power Stadium in recent years and O'Neill traces it back to the title glory of the 2015-16 season ByJordan Blackwell 12:53, 28 NOV 2024 Ruud van Nistelrooy will have to overcome a “sense of entitlement" that has grown at Leicester City, the club’s iconic former manager Martin O’Neill has said. The Dutchman is set to be appointed as the new boss at the King Power Stadium, and will be tasked with keeping City in the Premier League. Getting the fanbase fully behind him will be one of his big jobs. With excitement around his imminent appointment, he will get early backing from the stands, but keeping it is a bigger ask. It’s something managers have struggled to do in recent years. Claude Puel could not do it. Brendan Rodgers, despite significant success and claiming the club’s first FA Cup, was never totally loved, even before the relegation campaign completely eroded his reputation. Enzo Maresca’s stubbornness and style of play saw moans and groans from the stands, while Steve Cooper quickly lost support. But O’Neill feels that the 2016 Premier League title win has changed perceptions at the club, making life difficult for managers. He hopes Van Nistelrooy gets the chance to win everybody over, even if he makes a slow start, like the Northern Irishman did back in the 90s. “Since 2016, things have changed at the King Power Stadium,” O’Neill said on talkSPORT. “You’re talking about a side that has won the Premier League. “I shouldn’t really say this about my former club where I really loved my time after a stodgy start, but there’s maybe a sense of entitlement that after winning the league in 2016, that life should be very good for them. “They experienced relegation, and Maresca was there to get them back up again. He goes off to Chelsea. They’re left then with Steve Cooper. Steve’s allegiance with Nottingham Forest, I’d probably push that to the side. “Initially like myself as a player at Nottingham Forest coming to Leicester, there was a little dissatisfaction, and obviously there was a lot more dissatisfaction with me when I couldn’t win a game to save my life early on. “But overall, Van Nistelrooy, he’s got the name. He was a great, great player. Why not? If you’re going for someone now, he pushed himself into the limelight a couple of weeks ago and I suppose Leicester have decided to go with him.”
