Perspective - Rivals Pre Season

Recommended Posts

I made a comment in the Rotherham thread the other day about Newcastle and Sunderland performing poorly on the same evening.

I suppose I just wanted to extend this to look at some of our bottom half of the table rivals and their pre season performances, to perhaps get a bit of perspective on the situation and realisation that we've had a decent pre season.

Yes we need a couple of midfielders and a defender, BUT, in comparison our workouts during pre season have been good! The players, under a new manager, seem to be playing similar football to last season and have settled well.

Newcastle:

Club Atlas: LOST

Sacramento: WON 1-0

Portland Timbers: LOST

Sheffield United: DREW

York City: LOST

Sunderland:

Sacramento: LOST

Pachuca: LOST

Toronto: WON

Doncaster: LOST

Aston Villa:

Fulham: LOST

Braga: Drew

Swindon: WON

Walsall: Drew

Wolves: Drew

West Brom:

Salzburg: LOST

Orlando: LOST

Richmond: WON

Swindon: WON

Walsall: WON

West Ham: Poor performances in games against Europa League minnows.

LCFC:

3 wins and a draw, no losses so far, no stupid trips to America tiring players out etc etc.

As mentioned we have stepped up a level each game, have a look at some of the games rivals have played, against conference equivalent clubs in America and LOST. Also no apparent structure, a good team, then a poor team.....

Just a point really that the amount of negativity during our pre season games (yes mansfield was horrific, I was there... but we didn't lose!) is perhaps a little unnecessary. Come out of Saturday unscathed and with at least one midfielder signed and I for one will be happy with a very stable pre season!

West Ham look atrocious. lol

And angry/frustrated! 3 players sent off in 3 games

I tend to take no notice of friendlies, even if results are strange. They don't really mean anything. I mean, we lost to Northampton when we won the League. And I recall Leyton Orient beating Newcastle 7-0 and then Newcastle went on to win the League that season.

But as for West Ham in Europe, yeah they do look bad. I think they'll be in for a relegation battle again. (Not a bad shout at 8/1). We'll somehow still manage to lose at Upton Park though.

Just get a feeling that it being their last year at Upton will carry them over the line, atmosphere in those final few games etc.

Wouldn't read into pre-season results. I'd be more intrigued by their signings.

West Ham have actually played competitively and saying they've been dire would be an under-statement.

Didn't work for us in our last year at Filbert Street.

Have West Ham played their first team, though?  I thought their first game was a bunch of kids and the manager didn't even show up?  Have they taken it more seriously since?
