Fez of Mahrez Posted 5 February 2016 Posted 5 February 2016 Now I know tomorrow's game takes place on a Saturday rather than a Sunday but I'm reminded of a Sunday a good few years ago when four of the big clubs all played each other on the same day. It was something like Chelsea v Liverpool and Arsenal v Manchester United and Sky billed it as something even more hyperbolic than Super Sunday. With the media suddenly waking from its collective coma and realising that we're top of the league in February and all the chat about where an LCFC title win would rank in terms of achievements, it made me wonder... How many matches in the past 25 years have been hyped up as games between genuine title rivals outside of the four clubs mentioned above, Manchester City and Newcastle? Has anyone ever thought Tottenham were anywhere near a title win in that time? Or Everton? The obvious examples are Norwich and Aston Villa but did they have equivalent games to the two we've got coming up, at a point where people thought they had a real shot at winning the league? And is this the start of something new? Could Tottenham v West Ham and Stoke v Crystal Palace be the new Super Soaraway Showdown Sunday in a world where everyone has money and the big clubs can't take anything for granted any more?
Guest ttfn Posted 5 February 2016 Posted 5 February 2016 Only thing I can remember that was vaguely comparable was Redknapp's last season at Spurs (2011-12 I think) where they went to City around this time and it was them, City and United at the top, separated by about 2 points (think Spurs were 3rd). Balotelli scored a late penalty and City won 3-2 after moments earlier Defoe had squandered a great chance for Spurs. Even so, Spurs are still a really big club and consistently compete towards the top end of the league.
Kitchandro Posted 5 February 2016 Posted 5 February 2016 'Grand Slam Sunday' is what you're thinking of. It happened twice, conveniently, in as many seasons but it's never happened since. Sky probably decided it was a waste to have them all on the same day when they could spread out the viewing figures.
