Great Boos Up Posted 23 April 2016 Posted 23 April 2016 I thought the American kids were nuts about football because of one thing; the FIFA game.

americanfox Posted 23 April 2016 Posted 23 April 2016 Spurs' Jewish heritage may be embellished, but I know several Spurs fans around here that follow the team specifically because of the Jewish link. NY Spurs were even selling "The Chosen Team" t-shirts a couple of years ago. Who really cares about that, anyway? I was half-joking, relax, I don't need you to be pedantic or teach me anything. Plus, 1) it's not embellished, Spurs' Jewish heritage is a meaningful part of that club's identity. 2) My larger, semi-sarcastic point was that most fans who "chose" the big clubs can f**ck off. How can you truly be a fan of a club when you don't know of a core part of its culture?
americanfox Posted 23 April 2016 Posted 23 April 2016 Also, we're a nation of immigrants. Liga MX is probably the most-watched international league here, would you agree? Check out a Copa America game in the US this summer and see how few "glory hunters" you'll find. Also, I don't think you saw the hit-and-run nature of my original post. For your example above, I've seen that first hand (I'm from San Diego -- El Tri's strongest market). Although sadly, viewership and support for Mexican soccer seems like a mutually-exclusive population compared to the audiences NBC targets for Premier League broadcasts. Fervent support and audiences for El Tri and Liga MX have been around for decades, so citing that as an example of soccer's growth here is misleading. And of course ex-pats are going to watch in droves when Copa America swings around. Hell, Peru supporters out-numbered USMNT supporters at a friendly in DC last year. Misleading argument. The growth of soccer as it's advertised now seems more prominent because, simply put, more millennials and WASPs are watching.
Mad Dog Posted 23 April 2016 Posted 23 April 2016 Also live in California. Loving life! I've managed to recruit a fair sized group of Leicester fans here, they love it! Most people of you ask who they support here say Barcelona or Madrid actually, and they're more knowledgable than it may seem most of the time. We are on NBC Sports all day too which is bizarre. Getting a lot of air time on Sports Center too which is also weird. I've got a huge group going to the pub for the Everton game and can't wait!! But I tell you; nothing I miss about home really at all aside from match days. Feel so far removed.

Buggsteam Posted 24 April 2016 Posted 24 April 2016 What really gets me about American sports, the big ones, they call them 'world series', exactly how when only one country takes part? The world newspaper was the first big sponsor of baseball that's why it's called the worlds series
americanfox Posted 24 April 2016 Posted 24 April 2016 The world newspaper was the first big sponsor of baseball that's why it's called the worlds series The New York World, that is. But yeah, that's right, or at least, that's a claim.
Rincewind Posted 24 April 2016 Author Posted 24 April 2016 Yes I heard that. Some American's may not know that because they do not use it to defend being called the World Series and make it public knowledge. Is the New York World newspaper still going? The series has been going on for nearly a century.
Guest Posted 24 April 2016 Posted 24 April 2016 The world newspaper was the first big sponsor of baseball that's why it's called the worlds series Genuinely interesting fact that I did not know. +1
Mezeker Posted 24 April 2016 Posted 24 April 2016 why should Americans care or at least the ones that did not grow up with it, the fact that this frustrates some of you is..i will refrain myself.
Merging Cultures Posted 24 April 2016 Posted 24 April 2016 http://www.snopes.com/business/names/worldseries.asp Nothing to do with the newspaper.
davefieldsatl Posted 1 May 2016 Posted 1 May 2016 As an American, I must agree that it is very frustrating trying to explain the Leicester miracle to my friends. There is no comparison in any American sport. Also of note, I am not an MLS fan. It's very boring to watch has-been CL stars playing with garbage Americans and Mexicans. I wake up obnoxiously early on sundays to watch the Foxes.
