WE'LL BE POSITIVE IN CUP TIE

BY BILL ANDERSON

10:30 - 19 September 2005

Craig Levein pledges his Leicester City team will be making the running when they take on Blackpool in the Carling Cup second round at the Walkers Stadium tomorrow night.

Levein's tight defensive formation got the job done in the Championship at Wolves on Saturday but the City manager said: "This is going to be different.

"We will be making the running and it is a completely different situation from Saturday when we wanted to make sure we would not lose a goal.''

Levein remains unapologetic about the 4-5-1 formation that made things so tough for the opposition at Molineux.

Now he wants to see that defensive solidity repeated but also with the goals to take City through.

He said: "The thing about the Wolves game was that in every match this season we had out-passed, out-shot and had more possession than the opposition, but we were not winning the games. We were giving away too many goals - it was as simple as that.

"Now we need to defend as well as we did at Wolves but also attack enough to win the game.''

City are likely to revert to two up front with Iain Hume and Elvis Hammond competing for a starting place alongside Mark de Vries as the most obvious attacking ploy.

But there is no sign yet of injured pair Danny Tiatto and Gareth Williams being available.

That can change quickly, though, as we saw last week when Williams seemed to have made a dramatic recovery on Thursday but suffered a recurrence of his hamstring problem the following day and missed the Wolves trip.

Levein said: "I have got to take a close look at things because we have three games in a short space of time and there are injuries to consider.''

There was no word of any other problems stemming from the Molineux game.

So, with Patrick Kisnorbo and Stephen Hughes now looking match-fit, the squad is gaining in strength.

Hume is cup-tied. Those quotes from CL are from the interview he did after the Wolves match when clearly he wasn't aware of that fact. He is now. The Merc are obviously being lazy.

No change there then

I was going to go to the Blackpool match - and very nearly purchased my ticket when there to see Wednesday - but after the insult of Saturday I'm not going to bother. Any arsehole can attack against Blackpool.

I'll buy a ticket again when he shows some faith in the full press strategy he said he would adopt in the close season...against Championship[ opposition.

I've also stopped watching televised football (for ever apart, perhaps from City) cos after the excuse for entertainment offered by Man Utd, Liverpool, Blackburn, Bolton and England I can find better things to do.

I'm clearly in a minority believing that football people - players, managers and directors - have a responsibility for the way their teams play and for attempting to provide some entertainment.

If they won't take that responsibility then I'm not going to waste my money watching them con me.

Judging by all the empty seats around the country, there's a lot of former fans who felt the same way.

I was always a positive player as a sportsman, I was always a positive coach and I was always a positive manager. It served me well and if Levein is not convinced then he can play his football in an empty ground for all I care.

A good manager he may be. But he's chicken.

I heard Leic Mercury reporters talking about a 3-5-2 formation for tomorrow, after taking Levein's interview (which I did not catch, but I am sure will be available soon).

Craig Levein looks set to be without a number of key players for Tuesday night's Carling Cup second round clash against Blackpool at the Walkers Stadium (7:45pm).

The City boss was without the services of Gareth Williams for Saturday's 0-0 draw with Wolves after the midfielder picked up a hamstring injury at Cardiff.

And the former Forest man now looks set to miss the Blackpool game after failing to shake off the injury.

Dion Dublin looks likely to miss out after picking up an Achilles knock at the weekend, while Danny Tiatto has been unable to recover from his hamstring injury in time for the game.

Levein could also be without influential midfielder Stephen Hughes for the cup-tie, leaving the Leicester chief with a difficult selection quandary ahead of the game.

He said: "We have got one or two problems. I was hoping that Gareth would be available once again, but that doesn't look like it is going to be the case.

"We had also hoped that Danny would be back from his hamstring injury, but the Blackpool game is going to be too soon for him.

"Dion is also out. His Achilles has been bothering him. He has just managed to get though the last three games, but he just won't be able to play on Tuesday night.

"Stephen picked up a thigh strain on Saturday, which is one of the reasons why I want to leave naming the team until Tuesday. If he is out as well we are in big trouble. It will be a last minute decision on just about everything by the looks of things. There will be a lot of changes.

"I don't know exactly what formation we will play in at the moment. It is a matter of who is available and who is fit. The system will be moulded around who is available rather than us trying to pick a system and fit players into it.

"Every single one of the players I have mentioned should be available for Saturday, barring Patrik Gerrbrand and maybe Gareth. They all need just a little bit more time.

"But it gives an opportunity to the guys that are sitting on the touchline."

Meanwhile, Levein also revealed that recent signing Iain Hume would be unavailable for the game.

The 21-year-old Canadian international striker represented his former club Tranmere in the first round of the competition against S****horpe, and is therefore cup-tied for the game.

Levein added: "The fact that Iain is cup-tied is disappointing because he would have solved a lot of problems for us by being available, but it can't be helped."

Fans are reminded that Tommy Wright, who is currently on loan with the Tangerines from the Foxes, is unable to play in the match.

Tickets remain on general sale for City's upcoming Carling Cup second round tie.

Adult tickets are priced at just £12 for the game, while concessions can gain entrance for just £6.

Well, so Hume and Williams definitely out and Hughes possibly out. Great...

Going by injuries i'd pick

Douglas

Sheehan

Nils

McCarthy

Maybury

Hamill

Gudjonsson

Kisnorbo

Sylla

Elvis

de Vries

Subs: Wilcox/Gilbert, Henderson, Stearman, Dodds, Porter

It's a shame Chambers isn't 16, then we could have him on the bench.

I think he'll go with the following personally

Henderson

Maybury McCarthy Nils Sheehan

Sylla Gudjonson Kisnorbo Hammill

Hammond DeVries

Maybe Douglas instead of Henderson

Or Stearman at RB with Maybs going on the left at the expense of Sheehan

Our midfield may lack a bit of creativity I think, given Hughes and Williams both out and Hume cuptied..

(Would have been a perfect start for Hume had he not been cuptied - oh well)

Yes. And for what he did for football on Saturday and the way he metaphorically put two fingers up at the travelling fans, defeat against Blackpool will be just what he deserves. In fact I hope his 4-5-1 gets stuffed right back up his arse until he thinks again and shows some responsibility to the game and the fans.

<_< You're in luck my friend!

Why does he have to be 16, I thought he could turn out for the first team at any age

It's FA rules BUT because its a cup match i think thats why he will be able to play.
