fuchsntf Posted 4 June 2016 Posted 4 June 2016 MODS please dont move this thread to another topic area..it belongs here Muhammed Ali. Denied all odds just like Leicester city. He deserves his own place on this part of this forum.A Champions forum no less !! W.Indians danced on the streets of Leicester, with their white neighbours and fellow Ali supporters, on those special fight-nights thankfully transmitted via satellite (exceptional at the time). The common men of Leicester , from our great meltingpot off the streets, were brought together on those exceptional fight nights/mornings. Memories..after the Forman fight...3 lads walking home celebrating the incredible fight, bumping 1st into a group of W.indians, then dancing together in the backstreets. Another single W.indian, and Indian coming from their late shift on their pushbikes, after being told of the result, crazily doing wheelies and circles, cheering extatically on their way back home. Ali knew of the big following he had at the time from Leicester. Within his strengths he had some human weaknesses. He boxed at a time of true great legends, he took on all and sundray, he never turned down any boxer, he beat them all.He took on the American racist card, and ripped it to shreds. Controversy followed him and was a permanent companion, but thats always the story of the true greats. Not forgetting he like Leicester, had his doubters and unbelievers. Another memory from my schooldays. ON a school trip to London , we were given 2hrs free time,me and 2 friends all of us big and tall, were breathing in the freedom, playing on the steps of a top hotel, when 2 big guys come out of the hotel, and started to joss with us, we didnt realise at 1st , but we just were polite and shown them respect( miracle for New parks lads) they spent 5 minutes talking to us, asking where we were from, and our sport interests etc . They were alone no cameras or media, just Another era!!! Those 2 guys both massive and big hands, were M.Ali and H.Cooper themselves. We were so awestruck, we didnt think of taking photos, or even ask. But in those days it wasnt something to shout about.. He was a true great in his sport, and on the world stage. He made, changed, created opinion, no angel, but no devil. Like I said he deserves his place of his own on our 1st line forum. He turned off the light, but he was so quick he was in bed before it went dark, today one of our strongest lights was extinguished for ever. In all the summers to come you will see a bee, then a butterfly, from now on My eyes will fill and sting, my dreams will float with memories of Muhammed Ali..
Kendal Fox Posted 4 June 2016 Posted 4 June 2016 Very sad but at the same, time, had a feeling this was coming as he'd been hospitalised a few times over the last 18 months. But it's testament to his amazing will and strength that he was able to get to 74 after having Parkinson's Disease for so long. One last thing, as a fan of boxing, I am constantly irritated by the endless repetition of fighters constantly parroting and mimicking Ali's schtick for the billionth time!!!. They all owe him a massive debt (as does much of the modern, big bucks sports world) but I just wish they would stop as most if not all, don't have the timing or the charisma like he did to pull it off.RIP Champ.
weller54 Posted 4 June 2016 Posted 4 June 2016 A true champion...RIP On the day a greedy little grub decides to show his true colours!...
fuchsntf Posted 4 June 2016 Author Posted 4 June 2016 Just spent a great 1 hour admiring the history and story of Muhammed Ali, from the BBC.. Then 15minute of tears, feeling the pain of the time when he did not retire, when he really should of. Whatever god you follow, go with him and RIP. A spark from the 60s that stayed bright well into a new millenium. What a great humble statement from G.Foreman.
bluebeau Posted 6 June 2016 Posted 6 June 2016 RIP to a truly great man, one of my all time heroes. Apart from being one of the greatest ever boxers, he was such a fantastic personality. I could have watched & listened to him for hours when he appeared on chat shows such as Parkinsons. So obviously a very intelligent guy, what an entertainer, unreplaceable. May God / Allah Bless him.
