Ric Flair Posted 29 September 2005 Posted 29 September 2005 Ryan bids for gloryBy David Alexander. Thursday, 22 September 2005. 22 July 2005 Ryan Smith: Interview Arsenal winger Ryan Smith talks to TheFA.com from inside the England base at the European U19 Championship.. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Arsenal starlet Ryan Smith has received high praise from Gunners manager Arsene Wenger as the winger bids to make an impact on the domestic and international stage. Smith, who is set to move up from the England Under-19s to the Under-20 squad to face Holland at Burnley on Sunday 9 October, has been impressive for the Arsenal reserves after recovering from a cruciate ligament last season. "He has so many ingredients that you love to have when you’re a young player and I am confident he will be a big success," Wenger told Arsenal.com. "He’s creative, he’s quick, he can score goals, he’s left-footed as well, and he’s a great crosser of the ball. "He had a bad injury, Ryan, at a young age, but he’s now back to full fitness and he can be a very good support player for us. We must focus on the young players we have and give them a chance." Smith has already been in fine form for the Under-19s and has learnt a great deal from the senior players at Arsenal. "I always talk with the older players," said Smith. "They are really helpful in getting you to understand parts of the game that you may not be familiar with. You never stop leaning and in training they do some magical things. "You cannot help but to learn from people like that - it’s wonderful to be training with them. You can’t just stop and watch because you’re training but you can admire. "The manager says to me: ‘You’ve got pace and you’ve got skill but just use it when you need to but don’t forget to play simple when you can’. "He’s always helping me. He spoke to me before I came out here during our first week of pre-season training. He told me he wants me to do well here and then hopefully I can look to get myself fixed in the Arsenal team." Another player to make an impression this season has been Tottenham Hotspur's versatile Aaron Lennon. With three appearances already since his move from Leeds United, Spurs coach Martin Jol thinks great things are to come: "Aaron was our best player when he came on. Speaking to tottenhamhotspur.com, Jol added: "He stayed high up the pitch and was dangerous but the only thing he has to do is learn to give a better service. "He’s a very young player but I think he’s an intelligent player. He’s got to grow up and if he does that, he has a good head on his shoulders and could solve a problem down the flanks. He proved a point to me and I believe in him - I think he can be a big player in the future." Mr Wenger seems to rate the beast.

The England U19 star is hoping the advice of his club manager can help him guide England to the last four of the European Championship in Northern Ireland. "The manager says to me: ‘You’ve got pace and you’ve got skill but just use it when you need to but don’t forget to play simple when you can’," revealed Smith ahead of Saturday’s must-win match. "He’s always helping me. He spoke to me before I came out here during our first week of pre-season training. He told me he wants me to do well here and then hopefully I can look to get myself fixed in the [Arsenal] team." With England ranked as the top side in Europe, Saturday’s game against the Norwegians takes on extra significance as Martin Hunter’s side look to deliver their potential and reach the semi-finals. Winger Smith, 18, is one of England’s flair players and says he has been learning from some of the Premiership’s best - Thierry Henry and Robert Pires. "You never stop leaning and in training they do some magical things. You cannot help but to learn from people like that - it’s wonderful to be training with them. "You can’t just stop and watch because you’re training but you can admire. "I always talk with the older players. Libertine Posted 29 September 2005 Posted 29 September 2005 Please. Sorry Mr. Letsputadowneroneveryb*stardthing.
Scow Posted 29 September 2005 Posted 29 September 2005 I'm liking the sound of this. When was the last time we had a winger with all those attributes?
Libertine Posted 29 September 2005 Posted 29 September 2005 I'm liking the sound of this. When was the last time we had a winger with all those attributes? OoOoOoOoOoOoH Tommy Wright!
Ric Flair Posted 29 September 2005 Posted 29 September 2005 I'm liking the sound of this. When was the last time we had a winger with all those attributes? Not in the 15 years i've been supporting them and that's no word of a lie. Perhaps Oooh Tommy Wright Mark 1 but even he played upfront.
TornadoShaunUK Posted 29 September 2005 Posted 29 September 2005 left wing then... Im thinking Sylla on the right, this young lad on the left and we could be quids in with Hume playing an offensive midfield role and perhaps joey playing a holding role.. I've always been a fan of the 4-4-2 diamond. We could even try 3-5-2 with Hughes in the very middle.
TrickyTrev Posted 29 September 2005 Posted 29 September 2005 He's good on Football manager, 20/20 for crossing. Which means percesily nothing. A left winger is probably quite a good idea, we need Hughesy inthe middle.
Ric Flair Posted 29 September 2005 Posted 29 September 2005 Good old Arsene lending us another starlet, he certainly helped us out with Stuart Taylor last season and now Smudger. What would the chances be of us signing him permanently? Nice to hear we can have him for the whole season if things go well. Ker-ching

FNQ Posted 29 September 2005 Posted 29 September 2005 Sorry Mr. Letsputadowneroneveryb*stardthing. This is very good news. Well done Craig Levein. I'm just saying don't get carried away with it because you'll end up dissapointed. One player is not going to solve all our problems. Up to a couple of hours ago it was hard to see where our next win would come from, now people are saying we will win over half our games - That's championship form ffs!

Fox in a Box Posted 29 September 2005 Posted 29 September 2005 we gave them the original smudger in the 80's and theyve returned the favour Smudger....Smudger.....Smudger

I said with all our players fit, which would mean Wesolowski who I think would be a key player in terms of turning draws in to wins. Plus the arrival of Smith will help. I got carried away I apologise, no doubt Smith will be nothing more than a piss in the ocean but it's nice to get carried away now and again.

Yes, no need to apologise. It is the first bit of good news for months.
Burnsy Posted 29 September 2005 Posted 29 September 2005 Why go and get a winger who will waste his time and effort providing balls to park quality stikers who cant put the ball in the net. Why not go and get a half decent striker who WILL put the ball in net ?
breadandcheese Posted 29 September 2005 Posted 29 September 2005 With Smith signing on loan, we now have all the ingredients for a 4-5-1. Douglas Maybury McCarthy Johansson Kisnorbo Sylla Gudjonsson Williams Hughes Smith De Vries Ha Ha
Gené and Tonic Posted 29 September 2005 Posted 29 September 2005 Very, Very good signing, I just hope he plays him.
