Guest Col city fan Posted 10 September 2017 Posted 10 September 2017 I've made this point before and believe it's very valid in Slimani's case. Strikers thrive on chances. The more chances a striker has, the more confident they become that they will slot one of them away. When a striker snatches at a chance and doesn't hit it cleanly, it's usually down to nerves. And this is usually down to not having many opportunities to score. Knowing that chances are few and far between, the striker is under much more pressure to tuck it away. He knows there won't be many more if he misses this one. Take yesterday. I wrote in the match thread that we, at home, had two shots in the first 45 mins. One on target, one off. Just two. That strikes of a side really poor in creativity. And it also helps to explain why Slim in particular looks to be fluffing his lines. He knows he needs to produce to stay in the team AND he needed yesterday to produce having been provided with sod all ammunition. This is why any top team so relies on having an exceptional central midfield. It can control a game and provide the strikers with the opportunities they instinctively need to improve their confidence and to start scoring goals on a regular basis. I've seen this forum over the years slate so many forward players during lean spells whilst forgetting why such players are finding it hard to hit a barn door. Confidence. As a top striker, I'd have little faith playing in front of James, King, Amartey, Ndidi at present, that I am going to be supplied with enough quality ammo to be able to show what I can do. Compare that to Morata, who must go out week in week out just knowing that Willian, Pedro, Hazard, Kante are all going to find him both aerially and to feet. Our midfield is poor at this level. Slimani would look very different in a confident, creative side. Money aside, just as we look sometimes and wonder why on earth we signed Slimani, so too must the player look and wonder why on earth he came to us.
HighPeakFox Posted 10 September 2017 Posted 10 September 2017 Yes @Col city fan. This is why I was baffled at people saying Vardy was poor, or out of form last year - he simply had nothing to go on at times.

He was one of the best players on the pitch. Period.

HPF wasn't talking about yesterday. He was talking about Vardy getting pelters last season when playing in front of a Mickey mouse central midfield.

Farrington fox Posted 10 September 2017 Posted 10 September 2017 I've looked at it again a couple of times, frankly, I would say it was a bleddy good counter attack ending with a good effort by a striker who lacks games. Maybe Vardy would have buried it. Who knows!!

Slimani then made a great effort to follow our two stars up the pitch to be available if necessary. He was passed the ball and had a shot on target which was well saved by Courtois. Chelsea then went and scored down the other end. I don't understand the negativity to Slimani here at all. Mahrez should have drawn the defender and given the ball to Vardy for a 1 on 1 with the GK. That was the mistake here. Their goal wasn't Slim's fault either. What do the rest of you think? This. Think he played well to be fair. And he did well with the original interception for the chance too.
woodland fox Posted 11 September 2017 Posted 11 September 2017 Slimani will come goodj just needs more game time, when you look at it he has not really had a run of games yet to establish. But that was a brilliant save
dedlock Posted 11 September 2017 Posted 11 September 2017 Slim did well to get up there to be in the position to shoot. In fairness, it was a good save.

Slim outran NG to get there - not to be sniffed at vardy made a bigger hash of his half chance earlier in the half, dragging his effort wide.

Though i still think that Slimani is a terrible casting mistake; he just doesn't belong in a counter attacking team.
