That Slimani shot

Recommended Posts

It was a shot that could have changed the outcome to the game and I've read a lot of negative comments about it but if my recall is correct it was Slimani who stole the ball back on the edge of his own box and then played a perfect and quick pass to Marhez to give Marhez and Vardy a 2 on 1 against Chelsea. Slimani then made a great effort to follow our two stars up the pitch to be available if necessary. He was passed the ball and had a shot on target which was well saved by Courtois. Chelsea then went and scored down the other end.

I don't understand the negativity to Slimani here at all.

Mahrez should have drawn the defender and given the ball to Vardy for a 1 on 1 with the GK. That was the mistake here. Their goal wasn't Slim's fault either.

What do the rest of you think?

I'm not a big fan of Slimani to be honest, but the reaction to the shot in the match thread was ridiculous. It was a good shot that brought out an excellent save. He hit it well enough and the keeper got an arm to it.

I think we threw away the best part of £30  million on a striker who's great in the air but needs that extra touch every time and screws up 90% of the chances that come to his feet.

First name on the team sheet for me!

Don't really see what more he could have done.

It's a great save.

Agreed people overreacted about the shot.

But the negativity in regards to Slimani comes from him not suiting our style of play & is an average player in our system. Furthermore does he really buy into our team spirit?

How much longer does he need to 'adjust to the PL?'. Forget the PL, how about adjusting to our system first of all.. He can't.. He doesn't have the attributes and he should be sold.

Best I've seen him play largely, occasionally he wasn't sharp enough in thought when the ball arrived quickly at his feet. I think it has been said a few times that we have a certain 'style' of play, and he doesn't really fit it - that seems fair. Plus, he might have been useful towards the end. I can only surmise that Ian really isn't fully fit yet, and that's why Slim was picked ahead of him.

Got slated by someone in the match thread for pointing out a very good keeper saved it, it was never an easy pass from Mahrez to Vardy and thought the chance had passed but it was an almost perfect ball to Slimani I say almost as he fell over after the shot off balance due to sprinting up to support the attack class it as a good save rather than a miss their goal on what I have seen also has a hint of off side about it but I stand to be corrected As for the abuse he gets this is Foxestalk and Wellens has left the club. I cannot understand why Matty James and Wilfred have not dominated the midfield in the games against Arsenal, Man Utd and yesterday against Chelsea. Maybe you could offer the excuse that it is one guy coming back from a long term injury and still finding his feet and a 20 year old kid who has played a couple of dozen PL games against firstly a 3 man Multi million pound Arsenal midfield, a Man Utd midfield contain 1 guy they paid £90 million for and a 3 and you could argue with Kante playing 4 man midfield against Chelsea. All 3 losses were better performances than the corresponding fixtures last season where against Chelsea and Utd we were well beaten. Thought most hoped for  a top 10 finish and decent cup runs would be deemed a good season and maybe judging how we do against the likes of Huddersfield, WBA, Swansea and the likes would give us a better idea of how we are going. Also we have been unable to field our ideal starting 11 so far but what the hell some need a scapegoat and they will find one

I'm pissed about Slimani's shot, I've never rated him and he frustrates me, however I can't place 100% on blame him yesterday.

What i'm more pissed about and who I blame is Mahrez's choice to pass to Slimani. Why would you choose to pass to Slimani in that position when Vardy is there, in a more central position?! Just why FFS!

Because Slimani is his mate? Algerian? Facts and stats from last season show Mahrez struggled to pass to Vardy last season, he went months without making a successful pass to him, whilst he seemed to exclusively pass to Slimani.

It could have changed the game in our favour, minutes late in changed in their favour, that's what happens but we need to take our chances, ok it was only 0-1, we were still in the game but the game was lost on that instant.

If Mahrez is playing those games again it gives us even more reason to be calling for him to be put on the bench.

It's the fact he dinked it when Vardy and Mahrez were both waiting back across goal. It was a poor decision, he should have smashed it back across so that Vardy or Mahrez could pick up any rebounds.

But fair play it was a magnificent challenge and run.

We just seem really poor in the final third this season. Mahrez isn't really clicking with the others, Gray thinks he can take everyone on and Albrighton has forgotten how to cross. :/   We're so low on confidence and other teams can smell it.

If Slimani is worth £30M then I'll get my old boots out at the age of 67!! Should have scored, no ifs no buts no maybes.

No offers for Mahrez, we'll never get any for Slimani.

It was more "that Mahrez decision not to pass to Vardy in space' than "that Slimani shot".

Slimani worked hard but he had nothing like the threat, presence or impact on the game that Vardy did.

On form and impact, Okazaki should be above him in the pecking order, and (although it's difficult to tell) you would think Nacho is ahead of him, too.

Not sure how genuine or true that rumour of £40m (or was it €40, doesn't realy matter) from a Chinese club last January but if it was genuine and true we should have snapped their hands off.

Agree, entirely.

Only just seen it. From the comments on here I was expecting to see him miss an absolute sitter but it wasn't that easy of a chance. Nothing like that header he missed against Bournemouth last season.

I'm not totally convinced by him to be honest but thought that was harsh

there is a video of slimani and mahrez's touches in the game:

he started the chance (0:54) then a good run but unlucky finish/ good save by the goalkeeper.

There for me is why so many people hate on him, the price tag, which in fairness is not his fault.

People defend Okazaki, who misses chance after chance, falls over all the time, but he only cost 9 mill, and allegedly works hard, when he's stood up.

Slimani for me works as hard, but can hold the ball up, and as you say, good in the air.

Out of the strikers, he would be my choice to partner vardy at present, just need games.

I have heard people say he is really slow too, yet he got up with play in a break away featuring vardy and mahrez. He isn't worth 30 million. Though to be fair Drinkwater isn't worth 35. Prices are crazy.

The only issue with that shot is.

It hits his head on the way out.

What I mean by that is, that when your luck is out your luck is out. Vardy probably scores or at least wins a corner. In this instance slim draws a good save but they win a goal kick. From which starts the move they score from.

Shame but these things happen. Move on.

I'm far more pissed off by the amazing amount of time given to Kante to be able to pick his spot in the corner of the net and to roll his daisy cutter into it. Kasper should have saved it, no doubt, but the amount of time Kante had was criminal.

He should score or roll it across for Vardy to tap in. Simple.

You've got to take chances, especially against top sides.

He had a good shot saved.

Mahrez should never have passed him the ball we had a 2 on 1 break with Vardy, the fastest forward in the universe ahead of him. Chelsea or Manchester players would have rolled the ball ahead of Vardy behind the last defender and we'd have been 1 up.
