He's actually from Quenborough I think.

He possibly is, there’s a link to Syston somewhere I’m sure. Maybe he trained or moved there. He trained in a gym behind a pub l think in Syston

What was the fight where loads of bottles got thrown into the ring? Was that Sibson or maybe Minter? I'm sure it was against Hagler...

Have a feeling that was when Minter lost a fight. Can't remember who he was fighting. Used to listen to the boxing on Radio 2 - Charlie Magri, Ken Buchanan, Dave 'boy' Green, John H Stracey, John Conteh, Richard Dunne

Those two presented the end of season awards at the Lutterworth Junior and Youth presentation night back in the 80's. I've got a signed photo of John H Stracey in the loft somewhere!

Richard Dunne came to our school when I was a kid. His manager only lived across the road.

Always wondered why the 'H' was included in his name - why not just John Stracey?

Had a sports arena named after him in Bradford

Yes, spot on. Hagler stopped Minter in 3. Minter riled Hagler ( not wise ! ) by making a slightly racist comment during the build up to the fight. Minter took a terrible beating. Even commentator Harry Carpenter was hit, on air, by a bottle. Sibson ended Minters career soon after by knocking him out, breaking his nose in the process.

Those Hagler, Hearns, Duran, Leonard fights were the golden years.

The 80’s, for me, was just great for boxing. Have started getting into it again recently. In the past year have been to the Copper Box, York Hall & went to Leeds to see Josh Warrington. York Hall is brilliant, holds 1,200 people, so you’re so close to the action, and Bethnal Green is a great area, pubs are nice, met so many ‘proper’ Eastend characters. Thoroughly recommend a weekend down there
