Always amazed me when I saw how the Spanish players acted towards each other when they play for Barca/Real but can get on together and win trophies with their national side. Just shows how much the Classico matches were a pantomime for a period, they've calmed down a bit now.

 

The current squad definitely has a bond, and Southgate deserves praise for the we way he has built a spirit. The modern young players have different personalites to the likes of Lampard, Ferdinand and co and seem much more open to players from other clubs, no matter what rivalries.

They absolutely love winding each other up, that's for sure, but when actually asked about it both of them have said basically "that's just Real/Barca stuff" and Diego Costa laughed it off and outed them as pretty good mates.

My point still stands though, that video suggests that basically we didn’t win because our squad wasn’t pally enough which I think is a cop out. Part of the issue with England has been excuse making “we don’t have a winter break, we don’t have B teams, our players don’t go abroad, we sat at different tables blah blah”. The fact is we had awful managers and players largely not good enough.

The fact people fall for the excuses as well gives those with a motive to shape the game in a negative way to use those excuses as a convenient reason for doing so - see winter break, B teams etc... establishment protecting measures disguised as "helping the national team".

 

Southgate's blown so many of the theories out of the water. First manager in years who actually tries to get something more than the sum of its parts.
