This man deserves his own Topic.

No1 English scoring Batsman..ever.

Had his downs, but by God ,didn't he fightback.  well, each time..

Played No1 without a break...

Lost and won Ashes, seen through a few eras....

I have nothing but respect for the guy...

Top you all ....who has cricket at heart ,or just in passing ..Please go out your way to watch his last Test......

Briefly referring back to the Free Will & Determinism thread......funny how events can determine unexpected consequences.

After seeing this new thread, it reminded me of my Grandpa always listening to "Letters from America" by the other Alistair Cooke on the radio (he had 5 brothers/sisters who had emigrated to the US).

I've ended up going on Amazon and buying a book of that Cooke's letters from America.

Someone else will probably now end up going to a Proclaimers gig, won't they? :D

Oh, yes, Cook the cricketer does deserve acclaim, even if his form doesn't seem to have been so great in recent years.

Great names.....sorted of rounded off any day,co.pensions for sleepy summer afternoons...

hard to get my head round the idea of him retiring. I remember when he made his debut and it still feels like he should be 23 and 'one for the future'.

Time, does my head in.

Trouble with Cook is that he looks exactly the same as he did in India in 2006.

A great player leaves,a specialist..indeed!!

We could be well incorporating 1 player maturing into the role, and a new kid on the block, who both are selected on bowling, but

carry a damn Sharp bat...where 40-60s  the odd century could become regular...with the likes of Woakes and baby face killer  Curran.

With other top Int.cricket teams finding also a new style and type of middle/late allrounders. That old test specialist, long innings nr1 & 2,

due to IPL etc, could be on the wane with any of the  no3-6 being the big scorers. Al a  Root/Pujaara/Kohli...

So a future like....I

Let's keep with Ali for awhile...this winter tour..

Burns..Jennings...Ali, Root, (Pope),  Stokes, Bairstow,Butler,....(Woakes,Curran, Broad Anderson),   (  ) depending on need.

Ali/Root taking up spinners duties...include Rashid...or a.nother
