Child Gaming. Saftey & Equipment - Advice Needed

Recommended Posts

Mornin team.

So. I have a 12 year old coming to stay at my house for a sustained period who’s not had a whole lot of luck recently.

Of course he plays fortnite on his xbox and other games which involve playing online and talking to other gamers.

I haven’t played on Games Consoles since PES and FIFA circa 2008 and I need to know firstly what I need to do to keep him safe online in relation to these games and also what I’ll need to buy either for Xbox or PlayStation (also which is best as kids seem to be moving toward Xbox and away from PlayStation) I’ll be having the games console downstairs and buying a TV for it and presume I’ll need a router access point or do they connect remotely to WiFi?

I also would like advice on buying age appropriate games that might help develop the young person in terms of critical thinking and also in terms of expanding knowledge around football to help him talk and socialise and make friends.

I know there’s a lot there but he will likely arrive in 3 weeks and I need a set up that’s right. I’m also open to a PM discussion if anybody has stuff for sale...

Thanks,

SL

Consoles can connect wired or wireless to wifi. The only real problem you may get with playing online is if he has a headset to talk to people. If he plays fortnite then you can mute people at any point, if he can make friends who also play fortnite then you can set up a party chat so you only talk to your friends and nobody else can hear.

Football games you cant really go wrong with. Good Adventure games can give a player hours of play with no fear of talking to people online. A game on PS4 I have called Ni No Kuni 2 is a game that has quite a big political back story, colourful graphics and a decent battle system.

PS4 > Xbox. PS4 has a much better variety of games. Uncharted 4 is still one of my favourite games.

Another type of game he might like are the LEGO games. I'm 32 and even I've enjoyed playing them with my daughter. Minecraft is another game he may like.

It may even be worth buying the Nintendo Switch, you can still play fortnite on their and there are some brilliant games coming out for it. Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart and Splatoon are already out and you have also got Mario Party and Smash Bros Ultimate out before xmas.

I also have a 32" tv for sale if you are interested, my daughter got a new smart tv to watch Netflix on, Her old tv still works fine but unfortunately I do not have a tv stand for it as it was on the wall.

Ive got a 50" tv also for sale lol but I want to get it repaired first as it started to respond slowly. Maybe a bit too big for a 12 year old though lol

That’s really helpful, thanks. I’ll give what you have said some thought and see how others respond. I like the idea of party chat for fort nite.

With fortnite you are in a game of 100 people. You cant hear everyone talking though. If you play solo you cant hear others, if you play a duo you can only hear your team mate and in a squad of 4 you can only hear the other 3. So basically you can only hear team mates. Therefore if you get 3 friends you can become a squad and just talk between each other. So its only if he plays in a duo or squad game on his own is when he may come across a stranger on fortnite.

My ten year old plays Fortnite online and I do worry a little bit about him communicating with random people, but in general he (and his friends from school) are only generally interested in playing with each other. He's made a couple of new friends - some kid in Denmark for example and they tend to stick together.

There's certain games (usually shooters like Call of Duty) where if you play well, certain gamers will send really nasty text or voice messages, which will display on screen or play over speakers if you don't have a headset plugged in. I'm sure PS4 and Xbox One would have a setting where it blocks all messages from people not on a friends list though

If, it any point, you put your credit card details into the system (you're probably going to have to) Make sure they are protected and can't be re used without authentication. You will need to change a setting because as a default setting you can just buy what you want as the click of a button once the details are in. There are numerous cases of kids running up Fortnight bills into four figures cosmetic character customisation items, on FIFA UT Packs, etc.

Also if he's already on Xbox don't buy him a PS4 despite what many people on here will say. He'll want to stick to what he knows, he may even have people he plays with on Live.

I think there is a beta test going live today to allow PS players to play Fortnight with the rest of the community but it's not finished yet.

He'll play on what he gets and blumming like it!

My first console was a cornflake box with buttons and pipe-cleaners glued to it.

More seriously, this is true, but don't forget the reverse could also be true.

There's really nothing between the two consoles except the games available. For instance, the Ni No Kuni 2 game mentioned earlier is only on PS4, if you wanted to play Sea of Thieves you'd need an X-box One, but for games like Fifa or Grand Theft Auto there's really nothing in it and one year one console will be marginally better version, the next year the other.

But probably don't let him play Grand Theft Auto.
