Matt Posted 21 October 2005 Posted 21 October 2005 How can one company have such a difference in a quote, I am currently with Tesco and I originally paid £1700 on a Vauxhall Corsa (W Reg - 2000) but I then did my pass plus and my insurance came down to £1500 and I actually recieved a cheque for £200 odd back, which I was surprised about (I expected them to say they would just knock an extra £200 off next years cover) and I need to renew my insurance in Novemeber so i'm just getting a few quotes together, yet again Tesco (So far) seem to be the cheapest for me - They are quote £960.75 which is still alot but I am quite happy about that, anyway I keep going to other website companies to get quotes and they are quoting £1770+ Fair enough every company is going to have different quotes but how can one company afford to charge only £960 and another company is trying to charge me £1770+??? Norwich Union is second best at £977. When it comes closer to the time of renewal i'll start phoning the companies and get them to give me quotes, I will phone Tesco and say "Well i'm not too happy about £960, I'm sure theres ways of getting it cheaper..." e.t.c.
The People's Hero Posted 21 October 2005 Posted 21 October 2005 Believe it or not Matt, insurance companies DO do their homework. I wouldn't tell the cheapest (in your case Tesco) that you've got a better quote because they'll advise you to take that quote!

True - I did think that myself but that's what I have been told by several people to do and they have recived it cheaper by doing this.
The People's Hero Posted 21 October 2005 Posted 21 October 2005 Really? That surprises me. Well good luck with it. Driving is an expensive thing to do, and it ain't gettin' any cheaper.

Yeah well i'm expecting this to be the biggest drop i'l have for a few years because the first year of driving is really expensive (£1500 - £1700 for example) but then after the first year the insurance price drop and insurance companies are fighting for you custom, then after that it drop every year but not by much, but i've been told its a good idea to try and move insurance companies every year because you can look for diffrent quotes at different companies and try and get it cheaper that way.

It depends who the actual policy is with (and, for instance, how risky they think insuring a male your age is) and the exact terms/conditions of the policy (among other things). For instance, the amount of excess (compulsory plus voluntary) has an impact on your premium. You pay less if you are willing to accept a higher voluntary excess (but you get less money from them in case of a claim). Plus policies vary in cover (some include legal advice and/or breakdown cover or courtesy car. The windscreen excess is another difference I have noticed across policies). Some companies have freephone numbers, others have 0870 numbers for customer services. All these impact on their costs... Have you tried http://www.confused.com/ ? I have found this site quite useful. It checks many insurers in one go... And boy, am I happy that my insurance is "only" £330-360
Head Honcho Posted 21 October 2005 Posted 21 October 2005 True - I did think that myself but that's what I have been told by several people to do and they have recived it cheaper by doing this. Occasionally this happens but it is an exception to the rule, I got my renewal quote from Tesco then went on the Tesco Website and got it cheaper dont ask me how but i did
Collymore Posted 21 October 2005 Posted 21 October 2005 Try elephant They were the cheapest i could find. You pay for 10 months but get a years no claims so you can rack up your no claims bonus quicker, which you need for true low cost car insurance

You pay for 10 months but get a years no claims so you can rack up your no claims bonus quicker, which you need for true low cost car insurance Elephant are not the cheapest for everyone (certainly not for me) But they are good if you: - have no claim bonus (either through recent driving licence or... ehm claims) - you want to rack up your claim bonus fast (as Collymore stated)
Matt Posted 22 October 2005 Author Posted 22 October 2005 I didn't find Confused to good it was quoting £1500+ and it said Tesco wouldn't be intresed in insuring me when I know tesco would because 1) I am already with them and 2) I have already got a quote from them! I'm just trying elephant now. About Volentery Excess - I am already made to pay £400 excess anyway because i'm a young driver under a certain age I have to compulsory pay £400!! AGEISM! Thats what it is! Been driving for year and I havn't even had a scratch on my car [touch wood this will be the future too] If I could and it was legal I would happily go un-insured, because basically unless I had a major crash I wouldn't claim on my insurance anyway, if I had a little bump i'd just pay for it myself - yes it would be expensive but its either pay for it myself OR my insurance is likly to go through the roof if I claim!
Matt Posted 22 October 2005 Author Posted 22 October 2005 On Elephant with the 10 Month Accelerator it will cost £882.19 with 12 month annual on Elephant it will cost £1049.95.
cisono Posted 22 October 2005 Posted 22 October 2005 On Elephant with the 10 Month Accelerator it will cost £882.19 with 12 month annual on Elephant it will cost £1049.95. Ever considered buying a smaller car?
Sir JJ Wilcox Posted 22 October 2005 Posted 22 October 2005 Im 20 and have an N reg renult clio and pay £710 a year with tesco very good in my opinion but norwich union quoted me £2325 it's bleeding daft.
Cobbo Posted 22 October 2005 Posted 22 October 2005 Ever considered buying a smaller car? You are full of bright ideas arent you?
cisono Posted 22 October 2005 Posted 22 October 2005 You are full of bright ideas arent you? I know he will hate the idea, but given his current insurance premium... wouldn't you consider it?
Matt Posted 22 October 2005 Author Posted 22 October 2005 Ever considered buying a smaller car? Since when has a Corsa been a "big" car?! I do want a new car though - Bored of my Corsa I might just make a few modifications (Exhurst, Spoilier, Speakers, Wheels, e.t.c), although that'll just make insurance worse because i'll be considered a "boy racer" I am saving for my next car already my plan is to keep this car for about another year, maybe 2 years, then look for a new car something like (and before I say it - God help my insurance) a VW Golf! But then on the other hand I am also saying I want to move to Australia in a few years so it either the car or Australia, I might even put Australia off until I am abit older and much more experienced, because then I am more "appealing" to help the country!
Cobbo Posted 22 October 2005 Posted 22 October 2005 I know he will hate the idea, but given his current insurance premium... wouldn't you consider it? I never said he would hate it, I said you are full of bright ideas arent you. Sheesh!
cisono Posted 22 October 2005 Posted 22 October 2005 Since when has a Corsa been a "big" car?! I am not saying that it is a big car, but the actual model and engine also matter. For instance my car is taxed more because it is an sri, as well as a 2litre. I do want a new car though - Bored of my Corsa I might just make a few modifications (Exhurst, Spoilier, Speakers, Wheels, e.t.c), although that'll just make insurance worse because i'll be considered a "boy racer" Indeed!!! I am saving for my next car already my plan is to keep this car for about another year, maybe 2 years, then look for a new car something like (and before I say it - God help my insurance) a VW Golf! Again, I guess you would go for a high-insurance band model? But then on the other hand I am also saying I want to move to Australia in a few years so it either the car or Australia, I might even put Australia off until I am abit older and much more experienced, because then I am more "appealing" to help the country! I thought that the point system gave preference to younger people? The good news in motoring terms is that you can transfer your UK NCB to Australia
Sir JJ Wilcox Posted 22 October 2005 Posted 22 October 2005 Have you tried 'Shelias Wheels?' They are actually quite expensive Katassi my sister 27 and for a 02 Mini cooper she was quoted £1200
