He said "The big challenge is the position of the arm. If the defender is making the body bigger in order to block the ball it is not fair, It is different if the defender is challenging or playing the ball and it rebounds. But if he is looking to block a cross or a shot on goal and the player is trying to spread his body then it is a handball." last night was a block , he made himself bigger, and as such it was a penalty according to the UEFA directives Good call by the excellent ref Pretty sure you can’t change the rules of football half way through the season, though. The chap above may well want to amend the current law on handball, (his view of gaining advantage by making your body bigger taking the place over the current rule of ‘deliberate act of making contact with the ball’) but it should wait til next season and rolled out across all competitions. Quite happy United went through, tbh. But would be raging if the decision had been made against us.

Always found it odd they were able to just change rules or key interpretations of incidents half way through a season or campaign.

They wont see it as 'changing the rules' they'll class it as 'clarification of the rules' and there in lies the problem this continual tweaking to try to clarify, make it simpler and easier to understand more often than not makes it more open to interpretation as they tend to add in other variables.
Fox85 Posted 8 March 2019 Posted 8 March 2019 100% a penalty and I Hate UTD. Was the shots heading towards goal. Yes. Did the player make his body bigger using his arm regardless if he turns. Yes. The referee made the call on VAR and it was the correct call.

This is a new way of cheating to buy the referee, turn your back so if it hits your arm doesn't look deliberate. I'm glad he got caught trying to cheat. Could be worse. Could of been a challenge miles outside the box and a penalty to be awarded
Carl the Llama Posted 8 March 2019 Posted 8 March 2019 For me the clincher is the way he swings the offending arm up across his body, it's perfectly possible to turn and jump without moving your arm like that so for me there's a case that it's not naturally positioned.
