MrsJohnMurphy Posted 25 March 2019 Posted 25 March 2019 Thought this deserved a thread of it's own I'm a huge fan and he'll be greatly missed, kept pushing the boundaries right into old age Scott, Scott 2, 3 and 4 what a series of LPs
inckley fox Posted 25 March 2019 Posted 25 March 2019 I love Scott 3 and Scott 4. When I was a teenager in the nineties and getting into music they were two of those old records that nobody else really knew, so they felt like they were more 'yours'. They taught me that Oasis weren't as amazing as I thought they were. 'The Old Man's Back Again' is obviously incredible and seems more and more relevant with the return of more polarized, extremist politics. 'It's Raining', 'Duchess', '30 Century Man', 'Seventh Seal'... so many great songs. I love the weird recent stuff too, 'Tilt' and 'Bish Bosch' are the first to come to mind. The one Ian Brown and UNKLE sample on 'Reign'. The weird squiggly thing where he croons 'XIXIII' over and over. Bowie would never have done 'Lodger' without him, Radiohead wouldn't have sounded like Radiohead.

But, his music never hit the spot for me there are so many interesting singer song writers out their who can engage (for me) a bit easier Tim Buckley Nick Drake Tim Hardin van the man! Dare I say it Billy Bragg ps…. I started a thread when David Axelrod died (one of my true musical hero’s) - you guessed it - I got zero responses!

Yeah music is a funny one, truly subjective and personal. I always just loved his voice and am a sucker for a swooping, soaring chorus. The fact music is so subjective is what makes it fun I think. In terms of singer songwriters I was always more into Walker, Lou Reed, Roy Orbison, Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave and Lee Hazelwood than any of those you mentioned but I must admit I like a lot of Billy Bragg's stuff, just something slightly annoying about him yet I don't even know what. Gonna go on a YouTube binge of randomness now....... X

My wife and I cross over a bit and my daughter likes bits and my son roundly rejects most of what I play him! Billy Bragg is an amazing lyricist and slightly annoying…. Workers playtime album is both witty and heartbreaking

My Dad and I have pretty much the exact same taste though. That's what makes music so great I think, the fact it can feel personal. Sadly I have lost touch with the modern "scene", I used to devour new music but lost touch in about 2006 and since then have retreated into the comfort of 60s-early 00s. X
