Congratulations on Birstall Stamford (aka The Earl of Stamford or 'The Stanny') on reaching the FA Sunday Cup final.

They beat Joker FC 3-0 up at Alfreton yesterday.

Well done to them. Don’t agree with how they go about things and it shouldn’t really be allowed. But it’s a fantastic achievement for a local Sunday league club.

They bring players in to play their big games. These players are playing at Step 3/4 on Saturdays and get paid very well. The normal weekly lot get pushed to aside. For example one of their goalscorer on Sunday has barely played for them in the league.

The FA Sunday Cup is ethically wrong against what Sunday morning football is. Stamford ain't the only club what do it. A lot of most successful teams in this competition have been foreign based lads from London or Liverpool based teams with ex Pros.

What Cardiff_fox said.

They have a squad for the league games then when it comes to cup competitions they will get “better” players in.

ah i see, thanks

seems to go against the principles of a "pub" team if you ask me, but if there is nothing in the rules of the competition to prevent them from doing it then I guess there will be plenty of teams who will exploit it

The Earl of Stamford ceased to be a "proper pub team" well over 30 years ago ... along with, I suspect, most other so-called pub teams.

And I'd guess that most of the teams that have reached the FA Sunday Cup final in the last 20 years are not full of local lads.

It probably just reflects trends across sports in general, and the temptation to play "ringers".  How many international football/rugby/cricket/athletics players play for the "wrong" country?  100's.

I'll have to ask my mate how many of the ringers have no attachment to the club. He plays for Loughborough Dynamo and the Stanny tbf so there might be a fair few that have local connections like playing for Birstall United so it's possibly not as shameless as playing loads of better players with absolutely no affinity

The names are fairly common year in, year out.

It's pretty standard practice mind at the top level of Sunday morning football. In Sunday Cup, it's common. There's also a lot of money involved in playing these games - they have to be played at venues with a 'secure' pitch - mainly because there's trouble. The other semi-final got finished five minutes early because the fans were kicking off!

Not sure what Mr walsh is insinuating with his comment. I run Birstall Stamford fc and have done so  for 29 years. All the players that play for my club pay subs , all the players that play at a higher level do not just play in the fa cup but play through out the season , most of which have played for me for quite a few seasons. They play because they enjoy it and enjoy playing for the Club. You should be proud that a team from Leicestershire has reached the final for the first time. We took over 400 fans to watch the semi- final and hope more will join us at the final where we will not only be representing Birstall Stamford but Leicestershire sunday football too.

As one of two Loughborough Dynamo players who play for the Stanny (every Sunday and without receiving a brown envelope in the pub after the game as some users on here suggest) I can assure you that not a single player gets paid and all players in the FA Sunday Cup squad play out of loyalty and love for the club and have been there on the not so big occasions. We get it every week - people we come up against saying we're bound to win because we're all getting paid. It's nothing more than jealousy and an excuse to justify them losing to us. I know for a fact that Joker FC were paying out big money to their players in this competition and we beat them with a group of mates who wanted it more than them. We don't have different squads for different competitions and that idea clearly comes from people who don't understand what the club is about. On a more postive note... Up the Stanny ?

No one at all has suggested you get paid for playing for the Stanny.

One person said some players get paid for playing on Saturday.

Cardiff Fox said there was a lot of money involved in these games. I took this as him suggesting that we and others pay players. I may have misunderstood his point on that one but my point that we don't get paid still stands. Saturday football and what players may/may not be paid has nothing to do with Sunday football and our achievements in the competition.

To be fair, Saturday football and what players may/may not be paid has nothing to do with Sunday football and our achievements in the competition.

I meant in the games cost a lot to put on. Teams have to hire stadiums, pay for full sets of officials and throw travel in there too.

Where is the final being played? I wouldn’t mind going.

I had a look on the website but couldn't find it. I think it is on 28th April.

Last season the final was at Bramall Lane. Maybe it hasn't been confirmed yet?

Who's place did you take when you bagged £100 a game at nomads in big games or did you love the club......bit of a contradictive comment on your part
