Rodgers - Liverpool and Manchester City are Leicester's Benchmark

Brendan Rodgers believes there is still a way for Leicester to go before they can be seen on the same level as Manchester City and Liverpool.

Despite his side sitting second in the table, they remain 10 points behind leaders Liverpool and go into the encounter with the Reds on the back of a sobering 3-1 defeat to third-placed Manchester City.

However, Rodgers is looking forward to facing the newly-crowned world champions in another test which will once again see just how far his Leicester side are away from the elite of the English game.

"It's another difficult game for us, they're one of the most consistent teams at this level for a long period of time but we're at home and we want to bring our true game," Rodgers said. "It's a great measure for us and test for us.

"We have to be at our very best level, we're at home so hopefully the intensity of the crowd can really help and when the opportunities come we have to take them.

"I have a great perspective of where we are and respect the level we are at and the improvement we have to make.

"The likes of Liverpool and Manchester City are a great benchmark for us and a lot of teams at this level and we have to constantly fight to improve and try to get close to that level.

"For us to have a chance to beat them we have to be at our very best level, but make no mistake my players have been brilliant so far this season.

"We're second and we're into a semi-final so for us, it's a case of looking to always be at our best and to try to put in performance level that shows how we play and work."

I like that Rodgers has come out and said this, as it's in stark contrast to Puel who felt like midtable is what we should be happy with! But at the same time, there is a LOT of work to do to get into the same bracket as the teams above us. Yes we sit above Man City, but they totally outclassed us on Saturday and we never got close to imposing our game on them. But from humble acorns do might oak trees grow, and the improvement from last season to this is pretty staggering. Don't forget that Klopp finished 8th in his first season in charge with Liverpool and didn't win a trophy until last season. So I think a matter of perspective is needed even though we should all be excited and never forget to dream - it worked in 15/16 after all!

Don't mind him saying this!

We all bang on about breaking in to the top 6 and what better way to do it than aim for how high these clubs have got in the Premier League and/or Champions League. Obviously it's not going to happen overnight and there's still a lot of work to do. It's an ambitious thought to have but given how good a position we are in at the moment in terms of club stature, personnel, new training ground, stadium expansion, absolutely superb owners with a vision too I think it's a very positive thing to hear. If Rodgers stays I think he can get us there and guide us to the next level - not necessarily to the level they are at as they will probably keep on improving but European football can definitely help us reach some heady heights...

Regular silverware can help solidify us as a top club - we may not be able to chase titles every year but we're definitely in a great position to challenge for domestic cups.

We've been flat track bullies this season. Shat the bed every time we've played a 'big' team.

We have played all six of the so called elite, lost 3 away and drew, and won both at home... our problem is playing them away we are very scared to move forward and press high

Excellent points all. I think we've all got a bit carried away this season - my self especially included. Not that we of all teams haven't had the right to - 2015/16 spoiled us rotten, so we can be forgiven for reliving it slightly. Just to take slight issue with @AKCJ's point - we've been beaten by 3 of them of course, and in at least 2 been seriously outplayed. But I would argue that despite that we've been defensively outstanding in all of 3 matches we lost - so much so that it took 4 dodgy penalty decisions (1 each for Man Utd, Liverpool and Man City, 1 against), a lucky deflection for Mahrez and an excellent team goal from the brilliant reigning Champions to beat us. I'm not saying we deserved to win or draw any of those games, but we've all seen us pick up an undeserved point or win plenty of times. Scorelines could have been so much different with a better referee...

The bit highlighted in @StanSP's post is what fills me with joy. Whatever we achieve this season would have been unthinkable 10 years ago. Even 5 years ago, we'd all been very hopeful that we could just 'establish ourselves' as a regular Premier League team first, only to see us rooted to the very bottom of the league, totally dead and buried. The last 5 years have been unspeakably brilliant to us. And it's only going to get better.

I believe Rodgers believes in our project. I think he's finally found a club that is the right size, with the right ambitions, the right resources, the best possible owners and staff, but crucially, low expectations. I've said in a few other threads relating to a title challenge that we should just do our own thing and not worry about chasing a title down. I still believe that - let's achieve whatever we can this season and build on our squad in the next couple of windows. Having the training ground open in the summer is going to do wonders for us.

We have a seriously bright future.

Beat Arsenal and Spurs and played Chelsea off the pitch for the vast majority of the game at their place.
