rachhere Posted 15 February 2020 Posted 15 February 2020 Watching Tigers play at the moment (don't judge me - I just love all sport... apart from F1 - what's that all about anyway). Anyhow, seeing them issue a yellow card, leading to a sin bin, I was wondering what difference that might make in football in terms of cutting out professional fouls (I know there's been a bit of moaning about just how bad some sides are, and actually how 'clean' we are compared to other teams. Apologies if this is already common knowledge, but I did a bit of a google search and learned that they are going to be introducing sin bins into grass roots football: http://www.thefa.com/get-involved/respect/sin-bins. So my question is what would you think if they were to introduce this into the premier league? A positive thing, or just another step further in the quest to Americanise football?

I quite like the idea to use for two yellows like Hamza’s save the reds for really dangerous or violent offences. Might also be useful for when players have a go at the ref giving them a chance to settle down.

Sin Bins have been in operation for two seasons in non league football. Was trialled at Step 7 and below and now being used at Step 5. Apparently Referees are reporting less foul and abusive language issues.
goody2028 Posted 15 February 2020 Posted 15 February 2020 Personally not a fan of the idea, just don’t like the idea. However could enforce it for 2 yellows and then just use the red card when needed for horrific fouls or misconduct
Aus Fox Posted 15 February 2020 Posted 15 February 2020 I’d use it for all unsportsmanlike conduct, diving, swearing at officials etc. all the stuff that really needs stamping out of the game. You’d see a huge reduction if you were shown a blue card and sat out for 10 minutes.
Guest bss9401 Posted 15 February 2020 Posted 15 February 2020 Yes, for players and for gobby managers/coaches. I'd bin the technical area in a heartbeat.

You’d see a huge reduction if you were shown a blue card and sat out for 10 minutes. It's an utterly daft idea. Why on earth would we want to add more things to debate in a game in which we can't get the yellow cards, red cards and penalties right as things stand? Considering the amount of time we spend debating the sanctions that currently exist, how could it possibly make sense to add yet another subjectively-judged penal system? Imagine the rows over one player being sin-binned when another wasn't, or another was red-carded. Or when a goal results from a side being temporarily - and perhaps disputably - down to ten men. This is exactly the sort of grey area that the game needs like a bullet to the head. We need simplification, objective fairness and consistency. Sin bins would be yet another move away from all of those things... things which are currently screwing football up as a spectator sport. If you want to eliminate swearing at officials then more referees should book players for it. If you want to eliminate diving there are sanctions for that which aren't implemented, not to mention VAR and retrospective disciplinary committees which can flag it up. The infrastructure is already there but we don't use it. Do you seriously think sin bins, rather than consistent and properly evaluated decision-making, are the go-to solution for this?
Vlad the Fox Posted 16 February 2020 Posted 16 February 2020 It’s been used this season in grassroots football. I’ve not seen it in operation yet but speaking to a few who have everyone seems to be in favour of it, saying how well it works.
