Good Morning!
Doing some shopping today? In 1977 you might have come to the Village Square Arcade and popped in to shops like Lidikers of Leicester or Rosy Vyse. Does anyone still have anything they bought from the arcade?
The Village Square Arcade, or Malcom Arcade as it’s now known, was built here after the Royal Opera House was demolished in 1960!

I visited the Central Library Bishop Street, Leicester, LE1 6AA today (13 February 2025) and came across a remarkable mural created by Chris Brookland (I hope I got the surname correct). This stunning artwork showcases many of Leicester’s famous faces.
There are many more personalities who could be included, but what Chris has put together is truly extraordinary. The mural reflects an incredible amount of research, dedication, and artistic effort.
I had the pleasure of meeting Chris and asked if I could take a photo of him with his masterpiece—he kindly obliged.
If you get a chance, I highly recommend visiting and seeing it for yourself. Don’t forget to compliment Chris on his amazing work! There’s also a folder next to the mural where you can read about each of the individuals featured. A truly inspiring tribute to Leicester’s legacy!

May be pop art of 2 people and text that says 'LEICESTER HAS BEEN HOME tO MANY FAMOUS FACES OVER THE YEARS How many can you recognise? MADE IN LEICESTER t? Check out the keyiı Lhnterter/.ew.seS in the 'MADE IN LEICESTER' folder near this mural'

Because of this post I googled the royal opera house.

What a stunning building demolished to build this abomination.

For health's sake SWIM!
That is the message on the side of this Laundry Van, run by the Baths Department of Leicester City Council. Date unknown, we think sometime in the late 1940s.
The van took and collected laundry from the following swimming baths: Aylestone (Knighton Fields Rd), Belgrave (Cossington St), West Humberstone (Spence St) and Central (Vestry St).
Did you swim at any of these baths? The only one not still around is Central that was on Vestry Street.

One of my highlights as a kid was going on holiday and seeing the different colours of buses where we went....Dorset and IOW were green,Kent blue....simpler times. Now it's just First and Ariva every where!

Yes. Funny how these things register as a kid

When I was a kid I went back to stay with my beloved foster mum in the summer holidays. She lived in a village between Market Harborough and Corby. The buses in that area were green and formed a big part of my memory of going there. I loved being on them.

When I returned home, the Leicester city buses were the old cream/brown livery and I always felt mildly disappointed.

My experience was the border between London Transport red buses and London Country green buses. Same buses but the seeing the different livery was exciting to my young mind

The Village Square opened in 1970. It was basically a rebranding of the Malcolm Arcade, targeting a younger market. Members of the Moody Blues and Black Sabbath were there on the day it opened and a nude model appeared in the window of Rogues boutique, which made the front page of the Mercury.

Top Hat Terrace, on London Road Leicester, was originally known as Victoria Terrace. It was built in 1864 for Francis ‘Tanky’ Smith, a former Detective Inspector in the Leicester Borough Police who had a reputation as a master of disguise.
Here you can listen to a short BBC interview about it's history :

May be an image of book and text

Leicestershire was formed as such from a pre-existing Danish army-land in the tenth century.
The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle of 1087 contains the first surviving written reference to the county in English: Lægreceastrescir.

May be a black-and-white image of 6 people and boat

Abbey Park Boating Lake 1953

I used to love that boating lake.

"Come in Number 3, Your Time Is up".

We used to pretend we hadn't heard and eventually the attendant would grab us with a boat hook and pull us back in. lol
