Head Honcho Posted 3 November 2005 Posted 3 November 2005 Not living in Leicester anymore and not reading The Merc, who would you all say should take the credit for the Academy, It was always something that grated me that no Leicester players were ever in England U16 U18 squads. Now that we have, who do you think should take most of the credit?
TrickyTrev Posted 3 November 2005 Posted 3 November 2005 Alan Hill, who is credited with the bery succesful sustem at Charlton, established the current structure, including the links with Ireland and signing foreign stars like Petrescu and Wesolowski, but was made redundent around the time of Administration. Dave Basset remaind as director of football.

Ric Flair Posted 4 November 2005 Posted 4 November 2005 The biggest mistake this club ever made was letting Hill go, i'd even say it was a worse decision than appointing Peter Taylor. Only because Taylor appointed Hill as academy director and has to take a little credit for that. But if we still had Hill, we'd find it alot easier to lay the foundations for a solid club that has a reputation for bringing through excellent youngsters each season. We are trying to do that, but the majority of the one's we've got coming through were bought in by Hill (well Sheehan and Wesolowski was) so is James Graham and Louis Dodds.

There's wasn't much the 'club' could do about that. The Administrator had carte blanche to do whatever. Agree it was a poor decision, would we be saying that if it was his salary that took us into liquidation? Hindsight is wonderful.

The Administrator must also have had the choice of which cost source to cut. Perhaps another choice could have been made.

davieG Posted 4 November 2005 Posted 4 November 2005 The Administrator must also have had the choice of which cost source to cut. Perhaps another choice could have been made. I doubt there were many around on his salary, the Players were untouchable, the football management well in hindsight yes, didn't all the directors go, in fact pretty much all the top earners not football related. Perhaps it would have been better to have got rid of Rudkin and a few lesser mortals - who knows. I'm sure he didn't just pick names out of a hat. I would imagine at that time there was no guarantee we would be able to carry on with the Academy, there might even have been the necessity to sell Belvoir Drive. As I say hindsight - oh what solutions are available with it.
davieG Posted 4 November 2005 Posted 4 November 2005 Two words - Dave Bassett His redundancy alone would have sunk the club
Ric Flair Posted 4 November 2005 Posted 4 November 2005 His redundancy alone would have sunk the club Pfffft

Ric Flair Posted 4 November 2005 Posted 4 November 2005 So anyone know what he's up to now? Tried looking but most clubs don't credit their Academy Chiefs on OS I think he's at Charlton isn't he? He was at Forest and Leeds before he came to us, need I say no more considering the talent Leeds and Forest produced several years ago.

If it is Charlton, they're keeping it quiet, or it's Steve Gritt in disguise Link

He was at Forest and Leeds before he came to us, need I say no more considering the talent Leeds and Forest produced several years ago. What a loss, especially now, where the market for quality players is very tight/expensive. Alan Hill's ability to develop and find talented players would be a great help to city, not only on the pitch but also would have been a revenue maker!
Ric Flair Posted 4 November 2005 Posted 4 November 2005 If it is Charlton, they're keeping it quiet, or it's Steve Gritt in disguise Link Perhaps not then! I thought Trciky Trev had said he was there! Does anyone know where he is now? Google won't throw up anything worthwhile.
davieG Posted 4 November 2005 Posted 4 November 2005 Perhaps not then! I thought Trciky Trev had said he was there! Does anyone know where he is now? Google won't throw up anything worthwhile. I thought he did as well
Head Honcho Posted 4 November 2005 Author Posted 4 November 2005 I thought he did as well Probably scouting for some club

No. A Bassett suggestion that he was the man that could be both Director and Academy Director was enough to keep him and see Hill go. What a pile of shite we were left with in Bassett.
dodds Posted 4 November 2005 Posted 4 November 2005 Bring back Alan Hill!!!!!!!!!!!!! Scouting for Tottenham.Thats why theyre up there.
shen Posted 4 November 2005 Posted 4 November 2005 Scouting for Tottenham.Thats why theyre up there. Hmmm Alan Hill AND Frank Arnesen? If Arnesen had stayed a little longer, I wouldn't have been surprised if they were to compete for Champions League places before too long...
TrickyTrev Posted 4 November 2005 Posted 4 November 2005 I thought he did as well I think I may have been wrong. I was relying on memory. I would be suprised if he was not still in football, he had a fantastic reupation.
