Big legal precedent possible here. All football could end up being decided by Judge Rinder.

Never seen him and Mike Dean in the same room, now I think about it

I still maintain it wasn't even that bad a tackle, the bloke even won the ball. Not great but I've seen plenty worse, Perez's accidental one on Lanzini looks tonnes worse and Lanzini has been fortunate to come out of it alright.

If Fofana doesn't step across to block off the Villareal player, I'm sure he doesn't get injured. Just unfortunate that he was expecting a shoulder barge but the guy has slid in round the side from the back.

Can't blame the bloke for trying to get a bit of man and ball after having his achilles scraped a few moments before.

The most disappointing was the lack of empathy from Villareal and the player, that was tonnes worse than the challenge itself for me.

Fornals?

When you step into a boxing ring being punched is the bare minimum of what you'd expect. It's completely incomparable to this.

When you step onto a football pitch, being able to walk off of it at the end of a game is a pretty reasonable expectation, wouldn't you say? Not least of all when its a pre-season friendly with literally nothing riding on it. Having your leg broken is not part and parcel of the game - excessive force and serious foul play are explicitly outlawed by the rules of the game ffs. Using your analogy it's more like a boxer punching his opponent in the back of the head whilst he's already down on the mat. Very much something you would not expect to happen in any reasonable setting.

There's no way we could sue Villareal for it - it'd set a precedent which would genuinely ruin football - but we have every right to be furious with them/the player for how they've had such a drastic negative impact on how our season has started.

You're absolutely right of course and you could hardly sue the club for the actions of one asshole on the pitch. What compounded the problem completely was that the referee took no action whatsoever. Had he sent the player off possibly further punishment may have been forthcoming. Even so and before VAR, certainly in this country, the FA in a normal match may have done something about it retrospectively. Makes you wonder what would have happened had it been Lionel Messi from a so called big club that had been wiped out.

I said punish the tackle not the club.

SEND HIM OFF.

I was responding to the initial post - not to any response you made about the issue.

My intention was to point out that football keeps itself largely away from civil actions like sueing other clubs.

He should have been sent off and banned for a period concomitant with his importance to his club, but ten games minimum. Villareal should also have received some sanction.

This reckless act has had a huge knock-on effect on our current season.
