We certainly need to be smart with our business this summer

I like Lookman but this is where someone like Cornet might be smarter as he is a bit more adept at playing on both wings and also as striker

Pick up someone like Kokcu or Eriksen who can play as an 8 but also further forward as a 10 if needed

Could be why we are interested in someone like De Ketalaere, as he can offer an option at right wing, 10, and upfront if needed

Quality but versatile players should be the focus this summer, especially if we want to start reducing the size of the squad as well

Jack of all trades and masters of none can't be the answer. There's always room for a couple due to injury when short but specialists always surely have to be the answer. Perez and Lookman are great examples of players that do their best to do a job on the right but are merely fillers and you end up with a sub par product and mediocrity all over the pitch if you're not careful. That just isn't enough against serious opposition on a regular basis.

I didn’t say we should be signing “jack of all trades, master of none” players.

You buy players who specialise in a certain position BUT can also offer cover for another.

With the current state of our squad, the amount of “deadwood” we are looking to get rid of and with how our finances are we would not be able to sign the amount of players we would need who specialise in 1 position/role and cannot do anything elsewhere on the pitch otherwise we would have big gaps across the squad.

The exact type of signing a top 5 league side gets for a mediocre fee, they progress quickly and then the PL teams and the elute go scrabbling around for for 5 times what they paid for him and everyone's left wondering why we can't get players at reasonable fees.

Simple - takes some calculated risks on them earlier.

Like Diabate or Kramaric or even Ghezzal - our hit rate dropped, we became more cautious maybe?

Or maybe there is less of such talents around due to big clubs hoovering most of them up to prevent them paying huge fees to clubs such as ourselves?

I mean why pay 50m for Mahrez, when you can spend 30m on 10 potential Mahrez's and if any work out, great. Even if they don`t, they would still likely be sold at profit.

And that's exactly what's been happening since we broke football.
