Didn't know that fans travelled to away matches in such large numbers back then. Mostly by train, I'd guess, except for Bernie that probably walked/cycled!

Was that a young Bernie running on the pitch after the 1st Goal?

Yeah they did, I recall one game where we completely filled one end of St Andrews, packed out trains. Even hitch hiked to see WHU.

Saturday March 30th 1963

10,000 City fans head for Norwich for the FA Cup Quarter Final. Stringfellow and Gibson score to take us through.

After the match comes news that our two rivals for the League title have dropped points. Spurs could only draw at home to Burnley, Everton lost at Sheffield United.

The double is on!

Sunday March 31st

The Beatles' first concert in Leicester - at the De Montfort Hall.

There must have been dozens of people who were at both events.

There's no known recording of the concert, but the Norwich game has just been uploaded:

Believe Davie Gibson was juggling the ball on the Half way Line at Halftime.

The Beatles Concert all You heard was a load of screaming.

Here's some detail about the Beatles concert.

When the tour was first arranged, two US stars were top of the bill:

But just before the tour started, Please Please Me became the group's first Number One, and the US singers 'got the shock of their lives' when they realised who the crowd had really come to see.  Amid bruised egos and threats to quit the tour, the Beatles were moved up the bill. This was the tour schedule:

On March 22nd (the day before the famous Leicester v Spurs game), the Beatles' first LP was released. The group's set on this tour was made up exclusively of tracks from the album:

Love Me Do  /  Misery /  A Taste of Honey /  Do You Want To Know a Secret /  Please Please Me / I Saw Her Standing There

That was it  - six songs. It seems amazing now, with Paul McCartney doing two and a half hour sets as he approaches 80, that Beatles fans paid their money for a set that lasted less than twenty minutes. Apparently, as the tour progressed they were given time to do another number, Ask Me Why.

When the tour finally arrived at Leicester, the local press were still treating the Beatles as a support act: This is from the Leicester Evening Mail:

There was more coverage in the Leicester Mercury, as you can see from this excerpt from the book Beatlemania! The Real Story of The Beatles UK Tours by Martin Creasy:

Here's the artists who were competing for top billing. Chris Montez is next to Ringo, Tommy Roe next to George:

As well as the City fans who were at both the Norwich game and the Beatles concert, I wonder if there were any City players at the De Mont?

The week after that FA Cup / Beatles double header, Leicester City themselves went to number one - going top of the First Division with a 1-1 draw at Blackpool (Spurs lost at Sheffield Wednesday and Everton drew at Anfield).  With the FA Cup Semi-Final approaching, it must have been an amazing time.
