I love sci-fi and fantasy and am especially fond of Tolkiens stories, probably because the first book I ever picked up and tried to read at school was The Hobbit when I was very small.

I've not got Amazon Prime and so for the moment will not get to view The Rings of Power but there is plenty of stuff on Youtube to keep me interested and of course the books of which there are about ten or more?

Anyway, one of the stories  that would make a great movie trilogy but will probably never happen is of course Beren and Luthien, which is briefly mentioned by Aragorn in, The Fellowship of the Ring.

This video is a pretty good summary of the story.....

Enjoyed the first episodes of the new show

Seen the trailers and a few reaction videos, so I know it mentions the age of the Trees and the First Age including Finrod?  from Beren and Luthien and of course Morgoth and his underling Sauron before starting the story in the second age?

Supposedly the most expensive show ever made, seen a quote of £57,000,000 per episode.

So it is out, the dreaded amazon ........ thingy

Loved the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, read them a few times. I was disapointed in some of the changes in the LOTR films but also loved them. The Hobbit trilogy was pathetic

From the second read I skipped the poetry, songs and Tom BombafookingDil so perhaps no suprise that the similar style of the Silmarillion didnt appeal to me at the time.

That Beren and Luthien video was lovely, perhaps I should have read more?

Scared to watch Amazon butcher Tolkien but i might pirate the first episode..... feels akin to watching Forest in another European Cup final though,

Tolkien's creative output is simply unreal. Currently rereading LOTR right now.

Also a big fan of the First and Second Ages as everything seemed to be bigger in scale then, but there's much less detail on that that's been written down. Also, perhaps I'm not a "purist", but I have an open mind about the new Amazon show rather than dismissing it out of hand.

Just watched the first episode,Rings of Power,  no detailed spoilers

Much of it was like watching ham shakespearian acting on a stage with scenic back drops, no idea how they could spend 57 million on that?

The hero action scenes were too Marvel Avengers, also dont remember elves being capable of  punching  through walls of ice.......

Suppossed character deviations not obvious to me as didnt read the Silmarillion ......

It would have been a nice enough general fantasy show..... but I feel it was a soft opener, still dont trust where its going.

I trust Amazon in this only a fraction more than you probably trust someone who tells you not to worry about climate change because the rapture will be here soon

Fair to say. The initial reviews I've been hearing, official and unofficial, don't really paint a rosy picture.

Which is a damn shame, because IMO the Second Age (particularly the Akallabeth) would translate really well to TV media if done well.

How come I can (allegedly) dowload 5 GB of a TV show in 10 minutes but (in theory) all the City games buffer?

Anyways, as the skulker thread is dead I reckon episode 2 is worth a watch despite agreeing that Amazon have wasted an opportunity

Just wanted to add a cross general chat comment....... It was a teacher, Mr Fell, who recommended the Lord of The Rings to me...... the same man who threatened to relegate me to the then caneless Mr Majitis class......

I wonder if Amazon have any future plans for an adaptation of Farmer Giles of Ham?

Don’t think they have the rights for specific stories in the LOTR universe, just the rights to make a LOTR show. As weird as that may sound

I wasn't being serious. And it's nothing to do with the Lord of the Rings or Middle Earth.

I've said for ages that Beren and Luthian would make a great film, just don't let Jackson anywhere near it. Don't want another bloated horror flick.

But what I'd really like is Turin Turambar's story, the Black Sword.

Vaguely remember that, was there not two swords and the black one was cursed?

Personally still have the Silmarillion and The Children of Hurin but not read them in sometime, have thought about getting The fall of Gondolin since it has a few epic stories tied in there.

Found this video on Youtube today, thought it was interesting....

The Sack of Nargothrond is tied in with Turin Turambar.

Glaurung too, father of dragons. Star-crossed lovers, in there too.

It'd be EPIC!

It's not Tolkien but the author G.R.R. Martin is a big fan and  considering it is a likewise fantasy I figured why not.

Interesting video on how the dragon riders conquered Westeros and the big dragon Balerion sounds an awful lot like Beleriand, the continent that was destroyed in the War of Wrath in the first age of Middle Earth.

I'm struggling with ROP, visually it's probably the best TV series ever produced but it's slow.

I get we need character build up but they're is alot of waffling.

I'll give it the whole first season before I look to bin it off if it doesn't improve.

I find the costumes look plastic and the backdrops, though pretty, are disconnected to the actors. Like a stage play with painted scenic curtains.

I know, most blue screen and CG graphics are like that. It did not bother me in the LOTR trlogy and it was perhaps more obvious for switching between real and CG backdrops.

Perhaps it is the acting and dialogue that makes me think of a play?

EDIT  I like like House of the Dragon, no idea which has the technically better visuals, just flows better

Double EDIT   watched them last night, It is the ROP acting that reminds me of the theatre or pantomine, some bits are OK but I keep expecting Kirk Douglas to turn up in Roman attire and talk to god.

Really Into the Targaryens..... though to be fair, I woud have been seething if Galadriel was coupling with her uncle.
