FOL - Leicester 2-2 Brighton - what we learned from the game

In summary

*Vardy's diminishing returns - He's nowhere near the player we need right now

*How Leicester got lucky - We should have been beaten, Brighton had more and better quality chances than we did, got away with it.

*The real possibility of relegation - Don;t let the position fool you - we'll most likely be in the bottom 3 come February

In reference to Jamie Vardy: 'He has been poor for the last 2 seasons.'

 

Each to their own, but I would not consider thirty goals and ten assists to be a bad return over the course of the last two seasons tbh.

You might have a point - his overall numbers aren't too bad - i've just noticed a diminished return on his influence in games for quite some time and i know its not just this season. In each of the last 2 seasons he's had long barren spells and plenty of poor performances. He's never really been a player that you just look at his goals return. His overall game was amazing and now he just seems to sit in spaces and do a half press. I know he's older so he can't do those things.

 

But this season he's nowhere near where he needs to be.

 

I'm just gutted because i know his time is coming to an end.

yeah, he barely featured last season and still scored 16 goals

I think this goal is the best view to see what Vardy brings even when he’s not scoring. Watch the Arsenal defenders as Tielemans advances with the ball, all three of them go to Vardy and allow Tielemans to keep running and get his shot away.

 

 

People talk about our over reliance on scoring worldies, but a lot of them come from the space created for Maddison and Tielemans by defenders being scared of giving Vardy an inch of space.

Even when he’s not scoring or directly assisting he plays a huge part in what we do as a team. Even on Saturday against Brighton, where he wasn’t his best he was keeping their defenders on the toes, winding people up and giving defenders something to think about. I would love to see him used for an hour and tell him to run defenders into the ground for as long as you can, and then bring Daka on to run at tired defenders, have Tielemans pinging balls over the top for Daka to run onto.

I can’t agree on lucky to get a point, you mentioned the penalty they could have had - not for me, nowhere near enough contact from Thomas (Not KDH) to award a penalty. You forget to mention they were lucky not to have a player sent off. Other than the March chance, I don’t think they really threatened us, and I can’t remember Ward making a save you wouldn’t expect him to make.

what? when was the possible red card. And let's not forget their CB clearing the ball from under our bar. Anyone watching that without ridiculous levels of bias would see that Brighton deserved the win

If Albrighton doesn’t put the ball in the net, there were two handballs, the second one from Tielemans if Albrighton doesn’t put the ball in the net would have been a penalty and a red card.

My argument was we weren’t lucky to get a point. March missed a good chance, we had a few half chances. The one with their CB was actually punched by Ward resulting in it coming off the top of his head.

so they weren't lucky not to have a player sent off since it'd be concede or have a player potentially red carded for a penalty.

 

We were second best all game, let's be real.

I'm surprised Youri is given any credit for that goal, they should have just given it to Vardy for the massive part he played, especially compared to Youri himself.

 

I think it's mainly just 3 defenders that aren't communicating and they'd likely have done that to any striker.

Fair enough, you are probably right in the sense that he has been on a downwards trajectory - but doesn’t mean that I would describe him as ‘poor.’

It’s pretty irrelevant though, as it’s very minor to the arguments that you are proposing in your article, I am just being pedantic.

Its a fair point regarding Vardy's goals record though, i may have been spoilt with arguably our greatest ever player notbbeing at the levels of 6 or 7 years ago 😉
