Leicester City bank seven-figure sum from FIFA World Cup club payment scheme

 

Leicester City will get a small cash boost of £1.2m from FIFA for their players’ involvement at the World Cup.

 

World football’s governing body confirmed this week how much each team would receive as part of their Club Benefits Programme, a reward for releasing players to their national set-ups. City’s confirmed figure is $1,570,474, the ninth-highest in England, behind the so-called big six, plus Brighton and Wolves.

 

City had seven players at the World Cup in November and December: Youri Tielemans, Wout Faes, and Timothy Castagne (all Belgium), Papy Mendy (Senegal), Daniel Amartey (Ghana), Danny Ward (Wales), and James Maddison (England). Each player earned $10,950 for their clubs for each day they were at the World Cup, regardless of whether they played any minutes. Both Maddison and Faes did not make a single appearance in Qatar.

 

But City won’t just receive payments for those seven. FIFA’s scheme also pays for clubs who released internationals during the qualifying period too, meaning the fee earned by Kasper Schmeichel will have been split between City and his current club Nice.
