Interesting read, that. 

 

It does highlight how important economies of scale appear to be when it's apparently cheaper to ship fish parts all over the world to be made into fish fingers in what appears to be an entirely unnecessary fashion, rather than doing the whole thing locally. And the shipping industry has been pointed out as a significant contributor to emissions before. 

 

Be all of the above as it may, however, the elephant in the room remains power generation in terms of such emissions and their consequences.

Moving stuff around like avocados or bananas makes a load of sense. This is just dumb.

 

The doors in my house are English Oak. They were made in China, so shipped accross the world then bought back to be sold in the UK.

 

Scottish Langoustines are cheaper to buy in Spain than they are in Scotland.

 

We make more lamb in this country than we consume yet a load of the supermarket stuff comes from New Zealand.

 

The system is a mess.

No disagreement there whatsoever- the system is clearly deeply flawed.

Carbon taxes aren't outlandish idea anymore. A prime reason to measure GHG is to analyse the potential impact of carbon taxes

But every single point of a degree matters in terms of consequence, so action needs to keep happening.

I think the fact that Britain reduces resides in a very fortunate position means we don't always see what's really going on with climate change. For some reason there's no reporting of the weather elsewhere

Getting greener forms of long distance transportation is a part of the solution, but a much bigger one remains very blatantly, power generation. 

 

And the solutions for that are likely going to be more palatable to the public and therefore more workable than restrictions on the amount they can fly.

There was an article about the dangers of short term thought and decision making that was posted here seven (?) years ago. 

 

You're absolutely right - there's not enough action being taken and the Earth, if it hasn't shown us already, will not be shy about penalising us pretty damn harshly for not looking at the long game as good stewards of it.
