Brilliant. :appl:

Thoroughly enjoyed that. I love learning about the stories around football that often go unearthed.

You can write, too! Have you offered this to When Saturday Comes? I would.

Just a little addition to this fine piece. Martin stormed off at half time during the FA Cup game at Brackley after an altercation with the Chairman. Legend down here says that he was sacked in the Car Park but as you correctly point out, he left shortly after.

I had no idea he'd started so low down the pyramid. Hard to imagine a player of his profile doing that now.

Woudln't happen. A two time Champions League winner would want to walk into a big job.

Back to the main story:

In Martin's autobiography, published last year, his time as Shepshed boss is hurriedly skipped over in less than a paragraph. That may have been the result of the editing process,  with the publishers thinking Celtic fans aren't going to be bothered about such minor detail, but still, it seems remarkably brief. Here's what he says:

Shortly after that (the Grantham job), I leave to manage Shepshed United. Geographically closer to Nottingham, it means I can have more preparation time for training sessions after finishing work. They are of similar standing to Grantham, only in a different regional League, but I only spend a few months there, and my relationship with the owner quickly sours. I decide that I do not want to work with him so we part company. I'll continue with some radio punditry work, sporadic as it may be, and see what life brings in the future.

He then mentions that congratulatory letter in 1997.

And that's it. Poor Shepshed.

But I suppose we've all had that kind of job - and that kind of relationship - where you quickly realise it isn't right, and looking back years later you can't even remember their second name.

European Cup winner. He never played in the UCL.
