https://book.splitticketing.com is one of the web sites that gives you some options about split ticketing, but it sometimes comes up with a bit of a complicated solution with too many tickets involved.

I usually use it as a prompt or guide and do a bit of research via the "normal" National Rail website.

In this particular instance the advance prices aren't quite as good, as it's only one day before.

But you can still get Leicester to Sheffield advance singles for £8.60 + £12  ie total £20.60.   The other 2 legs are still as shown above.

So if you didn't want to bother with any advance tickets, and just want fully flexible ones, it costs a little bit more, but the adult (non railcard) prices are

 Off peak return Leicester-Sheffield  £33.90      (or split further Leicester-Derby £13.70, Derby-Sheffield £13.90, total £27.60 ... save another £6.30)

Off peak day return Sheffield-York £21.80

Off peak day return York-Middlebro £21.30   (TPE trains direct York-Northallerton-Yarm-Thornaby-Middlesbro_

Total £77   (or £70.70 if further split Leicester-Derby-Sheffield)

<<< EDITED TO SAY

For example

D. Leicester 08.37   (via Derby)

A. Sheffield   09.45

D.   "    10.21

A. York   11.30

D.   "    12.39   (there is a train 1 hour later, a bit too tight for comfort)

A. Middlesbro   13.36

D. Middlesbro 18.21    (you might just be able to catch the earlier 17.20 if the game finished on time, and you walked v quickly to the stn)

A. York       19.17

D.   "    19.44

A. Sheffield   20.54

D.    "              21.00   (this is a tight connection, but you can get back to Leicester leaving Sheffield at 21.04 or 22.05, by changing at Nottingham, arr 23.20 and 23.51 respectively

A. Leicester   22.07   (Note this is probably a good reason NOT to split tickets at Derby, as oherwise you can't legally come back via Nottingham)

gone the Boro > York > Peterborough > Leicester route. 8 minutes at Peterborough for the last train is a gamble but so be it
