Apparently it's 19 years today since the Mendes goal was ruled out at Old Trafford.

 

The Match of the Day clip is really interesting because Peter Schmeichel and Alan Hansen elude to VAR and both said that if it gets introduced it'll be used for offsides and penalties and when you start looking at grey areas we'll have problems. How right they were.

They probably realised how subjective and inconsistent it would be.

 

Whereas the more modern pundits thought the system would bring perfection.

That didn't need VAR thou just Hawk-Eye which came in 8 / 9 seasons later & there wouldn't have been any review it would just have been goal Yes/No & in this case Yes direct to refs watch

That goal gets given via goal line technology.

 

VAR doesn't go near it.
