'Perfect sense' - Leicester City plot loan move for Premier League winger as conditions clear

 

Leicester City have reportedly registered an interest in Brighton & Hove Albion attacker Tommy Watson, with several EFL clubs keen to secure a loan deal.

Watson joined the Seagulls in 2025 for around £10million after coming through the Sunderland academy. After spending the second half of last season on loan with Millwall, Watson is now expected to secure another temporary move.

 

The Sunderland Echo have reported that the 20-year-old has admirers in the Championship as well as City. West Brom, Hull City, West Ham United and Derby County are all keen on signing him, with Leicester the only club keen in League One.

 

The report states that Brighton are weighing up the next step in his development, with a Championship move the most likely. However, Watson is said to be desperate for regular football in the 2026/27 campaign after struggling for consistent game time.

Watson played 10 times for Brighton last season and marked his debut with a goal against Oxford United in the EFL Cup. After reuniting with former Sunderland boss Alex Neil, the left winger went on to appear just 12 times and now faces a huge decision.

The report from the Echo claims that people close to the attacker want to find a club where Watson will "build rhythm, confidence and consistency over the course of a full season".

Leicester currently only have one natural left-sided winger in Stephy Mavididi, with Silko Thomas capable of filling in. In Saturday's first pre-season friendly of the summer, striker Lorenz Hutchinson, who has played out wide for the academy, was selected by Russell Martin.

 

City are yet to sign a player this summer but are expecting new arrivals soon. As per EFL regulations, clubs are allowed to sign as many loan players as they wish, but only a maximum of five are permitted in an 18-man squad.

Josh Holland's verdict: On paper, Watson makes perfect sense for City. Everyone will remember his play-off final winner for Sunderland against Sheffield United and he has high potential.

The concern is, though, that his attacking statistics do not cover him in glory and when signing a loan player, that is a worry. If Sunderland and Watson want a club to sign him with the guarantee of regular minutes, he needs to be better than Stephy Mavididi, if he stays, to play out on the left.

In senior football, he has scored just four goals in 46 games. On the flip side, he is only 20 and League One could be the perfect environment to develop and improve those numbers.

 

The loan market is one that they got wrong last season, taking Jordan James out of the equation. Watson could be a big signing for City and Martin's dedication to work with young players should be tempting.

Young, hungry players with a point to prove are what Leicester need throughout their squad and it's understood the aim is to build a competitive youthful squad for this season. Watson would certainly fit that criteria.

That aside, he performed well for Sunderland the season before last, scored the winner in the play off final. 
 

I’m not sure why we think players who have proven themselves in their development above League 1 are suddenly going to drop down to come to us…

Because of the obscene money/contracts we are likely to throw at them

That's because rudkin probably told top league 1 is above the championship

Money is not really that interesting for loanee is it?  He will go to the Championship no doubt.

I may be wrong but I can’t imagine that is a factor for loans, and particularly young players.

 

He will have a contract and surely we could only pay 100% of the wages on that contract and not more.

 

He will be driven by the best development opportunity and playing in a league below where he has already gained experienced, and with teams from the Championship interested, we can’t be seen as the best development opportunity.

There not a single player that would chose league 1 over the championship to prove they are a ready for the prem 

 

of course minutes are important but if you can’t get them in the championship you’ll never be a prem player

B. we put hefty deal into Brighton with an option/obligation to buy if promoted that balances their books OR we can afford it outright this summer with owner cash injection or player sales.

With what money? We couldn’t spend 5m on Jordan James last year and have just had a second relegation.  We need a reality check around here because we’re not spending for a long time

No reality check needed - i said in my post “player sales or owner cash injection” they exist as options regardless of low chance.

We are league 1 now and not championship so operating under different rules where a cash injection is a legitimate funding route for transfer fees which is not allowed in the championship.
 

hence why we were likely looking at an investment group not so long ago which would buy shares.

But if this was only active when we go up, we’d have to comply in the league above no? 
 

If our aim is promotion, we still have to think about what any outlay would do for next season
