Official Blue Plaque recognition for Frank Worthington

Dear all

 

It’s a long road back, but the journey of 1000 miles starts with a single step, and all that. If City could have one striker at his peak to help with the long road back, the great Frank Worthington would surely be one of the first on the list. I am working with Halifax Civic Trust and with Frank’s brothers and other family members to get an official Blue Plaque for Frank near his birth place in Shelf, Halifax.

 

His Leicester years, 72-77 were probably the best of his career, and the time when he won his (criminally few) England caps. Frank sadly died of dementia in 2021.

 

Anyway, we thought it was time that Halifax’s only England International, and one of the game’s great characters, was properly honoured in his home town, so have put together a GoFundMe page. Any excess from the cost of a Blue Plaque – about £650 all in – will go to the Alzheimer’s Society Sport United Against Dementia. We have set a target of £1000 and hope we might raise a bit more.

 Fully support.  I was lucky enough to see him play 1st in '75 and more regularly in 76-77. Great skillset and great to watch as a youngster.

Thanks. I had the nicest morning with his older brothers (Dave and Bob) talking football stories when I was trying to put this together.

Thanks for your work on this, I’m delighted to make a contribution to the fund. Frank is one of my favourite ever players and he played back when I had a season ticket and went home and away. I have so many great memories of Frank, including his hat-trick against Ipswich, seeing him twice at Wembley along with Keith Weller playing for England and scoring against Argentina. I last had the pleasure of seeing him at the Family concert at Shepherds Bush back in 2013, what a character and what a player.

I haven't been involved with Halifax Civic Trust for long, and someone gave me a list of 'ideas for blue plaques' - mostly uninspiring, but my eyes lit up when I saw Frank Worthington. I never even knew he was from Halifax. Odd fact - John Noakes of BBC Blue Peter fame was born a couple of streets away from the Worthington's home - Frank's brothers said they used to know his mum.

I have been a city supporter for 70 years and rate Frank as the best and most  skilfull player in that period .Can  still see the goal he scored when he flicked the ball over his and a defenders head with his heel and volleyed in.  Pure class.

I was born at the same time as Frank scored for us, my parents who were both City mad nearly called me Frank,  I think they were joking though when they suggested Worthington as a Christian name  Though I must have seen him play for us I was too young to remember but grew up with stories of what a fantastic player he was and that it was criminal he didn’t get more England caps. I did get to sing Frankie Wortho though years later at a testimonial match, possibly Walsh’s.

I grew up wanting to be Frank Worthington. I was at Filbo in the rain as a kid watching him score a hat-trick against WBA in what was probably his (home?) debut. Hero worship for evermore

When I was at University in the 70s we adopted a stray cat that my housemate insisted on calling Frankie. He sort of took on his namesake's rather itchy feet, and buggered off to live with an old lady down the road (probably a decent choice to be fair)

What a goal that was. Shame that it was for Bolton. Assuming we're talking about the same goal?
