TheHonourableOne Posted 6 February 2006 Posted 6 February 2006 LEICESTER CITY have failed in a cheeky bid to prise Leeds United manager Kevin Blackwell away from Elland Road. Blackwell was high on the Foxes' wanted list to replace sacked boss Craig Levein, but the YEP understands that Leeds rebuffed their interest following a tentative enquiry. Leicester immediately switched their attentions to QPR manager Ian Holloway, and it's understood that he was granted permission to speak to City by his board BEFORE presiding over Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Elland Road. Holloway, who gave no indication that he was on the verge of quitting Rangers after Saturday's loss, was today put on gardening leave by the London club and is now firm favourite to take up the managerial post at the Walkers Stadium. Leicester were also keen on Luton manager Mike Newell, but are believed to have expressed an interest in Blackwell after learning that he has just four months remaining on his Elland Road contract. United are yet to open negotiations with Blackwell about a new contract – and that uncertainity could yet lead to the club having to fend off further enquiries from managerless Derby and, if Holloway does join Leicester, also from QPR. Blackwell took over as Leeds manager in May 2004 and after making wholesale changes to the Elland Road squad has guided the Whites to third place in the Championship. With the backing of chairman Ken Bates he has transformed the club into genuine promotion contenders.
Gené and Tonic Posted 6 February 2006 Posted 6 February 2006 He'd be a much better choice than Holloway, that's for sure! I like his views but overall I think Newell would be the better choice.
newms Posted 6 February 2006 Posted 6 February 2006 Apparently weve now been blocked for Blackwell aswell. I know its a good idea trying everyone but did the board really think Leeds would let us talk to their manager Blackwell
Fox 4 Life Posted 6 February 2006 Posted 6 February 2006 God no, why cant the Board concentrate on Newell??
TheHonourableOne Posted 6 February 2006 Author Posted 6 February 2006 Whats wrong with the Blackmeister?
Jon the Hat Posted 6 February 2006 Posted 6 February 2006 Whats wrong with the Blackmeister? Why on earth would he leave Leeds?? In the playoffs, big club (albeit not the best stadium) and a Chairman likely to keep funding transfers.
TheHonourableOne Posted 6 February 2006 Author Posted 6 February 2006 Couldn't agree more, stick with the Kellsmeister.
Fox 4 Life Posted 6 February 2006 Posted 6 February 2006 the Blackmeister is a glorified Mickey Adams, signs chronic amounts of players, no thank you! Newell is the fookin man for LCFC, either him or stick with Kelly
Polyphonic Posted 6 February 2006 Posted 6 February 2006 What on earth of the Club upto ??? we are going to end up in big trouble with the FA at this rate. Why on earth would Blackwell want to leave leeds, its complete madness ... they sound as if they are panicing the board
Monk Posted 6 February 2006 Posted 6 February 2006 Disappointed to be honest. Like you guys say, why would he leave leeds and how on earth would we afford the compensation? Whether or not this is tactical I don't know, but it can't look good to Newell if he is considering Leicester and he see's us approaching a gazillion other managers. Stick with R Kelly, at least until Saturday... R Kelly Can Hoof us into the top half of the table. Mission: Don't let the ball touch the ground

Louise Posted 6 February 2006 Posted 6 February 2006 I like the last paragraph saying how he's out of contract and yet to agree a new deal. Cotterill has gotten a new contract from our interest, QPR have tried to get rid of their manager for free from our 'interest', and now Blackwell wants a new contract off our 'interest'.

Where as the Newellmeister probably has a few more years on his contract.
chili_con_carne Posted 6 February 2006 Posted 6 February 2006 I think other clubs must be paying Leicester to do this! Offering jobs to ridiculous targets, to try and effect the targets club. who will it be next? Sheff Utd paying Leicester to offer Readings manager the job.

Maybe we should have stuck the Craigmeister in the bank, we would have got some interest each year.
Len Finsbury Posted 6 February 2006 Posted 6 February 2006 Why on earth would he leave Leeds?? In the playoffs, big club (albeit not the best stadium) and a Chairman likely to keep funding transfers. My thoughts exactly - ok, Leeds aren't the club they were but why he'd swap chance of promotion for a relegation scrap is beyond me. The only thing that may come in to play is that if Leeds get promoted, they might go for a 'higher profile' manager leaving Blackwell on the dole. I'd prefer it if we concentrated on Newell - I think Luton may be starting to crack.

Sadly I hadn't thought about this that way ... it sounds like we are being used. The board say they are now down to the last two and I hope by Friday at the latest we either have a new manager or an idea of what is going to happen for the rest of the season !
breadandcheese Posted 6 February 2006 Posted 6 February 2006 Not sure I believe this one. I do not think the club would approach Leeds at all. Blackwell is well supported at a big club, has more money at Leeds than Leicester can offer and has a shot at reaching the premier league this season. Granted our board can be daft, but unless this was a prank call to wind Ken Bates up, would not bother considering Blackwell for the job. All in all, a rubbish rumour put out by clubcall with absolutely nothing to back it up.

It's got to be Newell and Kelly surely?

Where as the Newellmeister probably has a few more years on his contract. I'm not sure exactly how it works but as Leeds are a bigger club than Luton I would have thought that they could demand more money for Blackwell than Luton could fo Newell, even though he has less time on his contract. I may be utterly wrong.

Polyphonic Posted 6 February 2006 Posted 6 February 2006 It's got to be Newell and Kelly surely? I wouldn't be too upset to see either take over for the rest of the season, or even both Newell and Kelly it certianly seems from Fryatts comments that the player respect Kelly so why not ?

From what the board has said, if RK is to stay in charge he is going to need a backup. I do not believe that this will be MN as he would want too much of an active role. I think RK will stay in so I do not think we will actually sign MN. He's more likely to look at someone like MON or Bassett (god forbid) to support RK. 100 posts. Woo
