Scow Posted 29 October 2004 Posted 29 October 2004 Independent say he'll be confirmed as manager today..... Craig Levein is expected to be confirmed as the new Leicester City manager later today, despite the efforts of the new Hearts owner, Vladimir Romanov, to retain the services of the 40-year-old, who is widely regarded as one of the brightest young prospects to emerge from Scottish football.Levein attended a meeting with the Lithuanian banker last night, hours after Hearts refused Leicester's first request for official permission to open negotiations with the former Scottish international. During the talks with Romanov he expressed his desire to talk to the Championship side. Romanov has made no secret of his desire to keep Levein, who has guided Hearts into the Uefa Cup for the last three seasons, but he relented over Leicester's request to approach Levein when the manager indicated that he would like to take on the challenge of English football, because of the difficulty of breaking the stranglehold of Rangers and Celtic in Scotland. Leicester are ready to offer the Hearts manager a two-and-a-half-year contract and have made it clear they are prepared to pay the £250,000 compensation clause to secure his release from the Scottish Premier League club. They are quietly confident that Levein will agree terms of around £350,000-a-year during negotiations with the director of football Dave Bassett, who has been in temporary charge of Leicester since Micky Adams' surprise resignation almost three weeks ago. Levein is expected to travel with the Leicester team for their game at Cardiff, but Bassett will remain in charge of team affairs, before handing over the reins on Monday. Bassett will remain as director of football, but the return to the game of former FA technical director Howard Wilkinson as his assistant will be a short-lived one. Levein has already lined up his Hearts assistant, Peter Houston, to be his No 2 at the Walkers Stadium. Link - Independent
gloucesterfox Posted 29 October 2004 Posted 29 October 2004 Saggers interviewed Pat Murphy about WBA, and then the talk shifted onto City and Levein, apparently Tim Davies had just gone into a meeting at the Walkers and according to Murphy it was a done deal. 30682 Although I think it will happen I would not be reassured by anything Pat Murphy said he makes terrible badly informed statements. Like his recent classic when David Collier (a Leicester lad) was appointed CEO of the ECB he said that it was disappointing that they did not appoint someone with commercial experience outside cricket, excuse me Pat he ran a company with a turn over of $2.9 Billion for 5 years, he was the youngest ever and first non-American Vice-President of American Airlines, turning a loss making division into the most profitable one, as well as MD of two other major companies. Murphy just spouts off without doing his homework.

dynamite foxes Posted 29 October 2004 Posted 29 October 2004 Why do people want a manager who they hardly know anything about so much?He has done well at Hearts but being the best side in the SPL except the Old Firm isn't exactly a unbelievable achievement. I am by no means saying I don't want him here it's just he is unexperienced and has no experience in this country, I find it strange that despite that most people on here want him more than Megson, Penney, Strachan etc who have achieved things in this country. 30441 come on man, thisguy has taken hearts to 3rd, O'Neill has recommended him and plays attractive football and is a disciplinarian. What more do you want, because if you want strachan, he wants scotland so there you go
Broken Heart Posted 29 October 2004 Posted 29 October 2004 Sadly, third is ALL we have to play for up here outside of the Old Scum! I seriously doubt even LCFC would break their stranglehold on the Scottish game so IMO Levein is the best manager up here. Similarly you have NO chance of ever challenging Arsenal or Chelsea (or even the fading Man U) in the foreseeable (or maybe even any) future. Craig Levein WILL make you a very difficult team to beat anywhere and has a home record which stands up to any as its now over two years since a team other than Celtic or Rangers defeated Hearts in Edinburgh! All that is required is that your "superstars" get the finger out and you may (i hope) become a top half Premiership side given time. Wouldn't you love that? PS To all you doubters of Scottish bosses, who was the last successful English manager in England? Wasn't it your man Wilkinson in 1991 with Leeds? Since then three Scots have won the Premiership. We may not be any good but we work damn hard and expect othersto do likewise!

We have been a shambles at home in the last 2 years.

You stick of rocks have something about you. P.S. Broken Heart, your welcome to come down sometime and watch Leicester play, anytime mate.

TrickyTrev Posted 29 October 2004 Posted 29 October 2004 I see that it is a risk but believe it is one worth taking. I never really thought we had a realistic chance of getting Strachan or anyone else like him and thought we would end up having to chose from the likes of Hohn Gregory and Brian Robson. The board have used their imagination and gone for a non-failing manager with an excellent record. Not guarenteed to work out but there is a better chance than if we had appointed a manger with a history of failure.
Broken Heart Posted 29 October 2004 Posted 29 October 2004 MON you are quite right! Sorry for the schoolboy error! My Grandma once told me time would fly by faster as you got older, I was counting George Graham. Was it really THAT long ago? Oh and ALEX I did mention the possibility of never challenging the big guns in ANY future.
TrickyTrev Posted 29 October 2004 Posted 29 October 2004 Technically Ray Hardord was joint manager with King Kenny so an English manager has won the premiership since Howard Wilkinson. I do looka t the premierships recent hsitory and there has been a trend of Scottish mangers suceeding. Grame Souness Kenny Dalglish David Moyes Gordon Strachan Alex Fergurson.

It was only for the benefit of the doubters of CL because he's Scottish.

I think the worry that Leicester fans have is that he has only done it in the Scottish league which with respect is not of a very high standard when you consdier we want to be competing in the premiership. It is a risk we have to take in a present situation though and hopefully everything will work out for the best.
Carlo Posted 29 October 2004 Author Posted 29 October 2004 Sorry to take him let's hope you get a sound replacement apparently MA is interested!!!!! Only kidding!!!!

Mark Posted 29 October 2004 Posted 29 October 2004 Hearts fan, how's Levein when it comes to motivating during the game? Is he on the touchline giving out orders or does he stand back? Adams always stood back and rarely got involved, something that pissed me off immensely

King Kyle lcfc Posted 29 October 2004 Posted 29 October 2004 I didn't really think about how many managers in the prem were scottish and if you look at it they all do well in sweaty sock land then come down here and do well e.g Alex Ferguson Aberdeen to man utd. i weren't sure about levein before i preffered Megson but ithink he'll do ok for us as long as he gets certain players Heads removed from there own arses like dublin.
Carlo Posted 29 October 2004 Author Posted 29 October 2004 i hope he is another MON, i loved those leaps when we scored! Apparently not according to the hearts messageboard
