Mark Posted 20 July 2004 Posted 20 July 2004 I've heard from a few people that they are having trouble viewing the pages on this forum because of the size of the signatures, those who have dial up its taking upto 40 seconds to view a page! Dont worry i aint going to remove them. But could you please make them less than 20kb, some of them i've noticed are more than this. Its simple to do.. 1. Save the signature onto your computer 2. Edit it in paint. 3. Highlight it and Cut it. 4. Start a New and click paste. 5. Save as a different filename - and then it should be less than 20kb and look exactly the same as before. Then upload the file to upload it. Thanks. (if you cant be arsed doing it just say and i suppose i'll have to do it myself <_< )
Scow Posted 20 July 2004 Posted 20 July 2004 If Guests on dial up are having problems with the speed of loading of up pages - You can register, and by doing so, disable signatures in all posts. You do this by: * Going to My Controls * Options * Board Settings * It's the first option - Select 'No'
Ash Posted 21 July 2004 Posted 21 July 2004 Also www.Villagephotos.com is availbe to upload any pictures , Then once uploading get the URL Address. URL ADDRESS [./IMG](Paste it in between IMG brackets and your Picture will upload to your signature ) (Also there's should be any . in the IMG bracket , like there is in the EG above Like so l l \/
Daggers Posted 4 January 2007 Posted 4 January 2007 Should we have a limit to the amount of space a signature takes up? Some peoples sigs are currently longer than a Thracian post about Porter...it's getting silly I think.
JoeyB Posted 4 January 2007 Posted 4 January 2007 how big is mine? (signature that is ) if its big i'll redo it (if you let me know)

potter3 Posted 4 January 2007 Posted 4 January 2007 ohhh how come my SIG is bigger than your SIG is yours a JPEG image? or is it the way youve uploaded it? Mines a .gif I don't know what the difference is though
lookwhaticando Posted 4 January 2007 Posted 4 January 2007 This is aimed mainly at Mark... For some forum software (PHPBB for sure) there are mods available which limit the number of times a persons' signature appears in a thread. That'd cut the clutter, so to speak, as signatures only appear once from each user. For example, the signature appears only in the users first contribution to the topic. In this topic, my signature would be included only in this particular post. If I was to post again in half an hours time, my signature would be disabled completely in that post. My beef with signatures is the fact that some of the most prolific posters have the biggest signatures - so it appears 3 or 4 times in the same page of a thread. That clutters things up - big time! A limit in the number of times a signature appears is a great way of limiting the clutter, I reckon. I, for one, am doing my bit. As you'll probably notice, my tiny little signature only appears from time to time. Usually when my post is quite long (for aesthetic purposes on my part). EDIT: I've actually found such a mod for IPB v2.1.x @ invisionize.com
lookwhaticando Posted 4 January 2007 Posted 4 January 2007 Mines a .gif I don't know what the difference is though Different compression methods. The main determinant of size is whether there's a lot of detail or not. I think JPG's are often smallest in size because of the way they combine pixels of the same colour. Bitmaps are the biggest of the mainstream file types because they literally 'map' every single 'bit' or pixel. GIF and JPG compress the image by combining pixels of the same/very similar colour. That typically cuts the number of truly mapped pixels by a lot. Personally, I use PNG when I've edited a picture in MS Paint - it retains the quality (sometimes JPGs in Paint go wrong, and GIFs lose colour information like you wouldn't believe) and cuts the size. That's only when you edit in paint though... proper image software does JPG/GIF just fine.
Rincewind Posted 4 January 2007 Posted 4 January 2007 In the forum I've just joined you have the choice of including your sig in each post by clicking a box. you can make it permanent in your profile but I wondered at first why mine had not shown. I only have a couple of lines on that one at the moment.
