African Sides At The World Cup

Recommended Posts

Having watched all the games so far of this world cup, I must admit I am suprised by the standard of the sides coming from Africa. Even the Togo and Angola sides have impressed. Is it just me or is the future looking really bright for African football??

They are playing pretty well, and have had very some hard opening games (Italy, Argentina, Portugal etc).

They still seem to suffer from the odd dodgy keeper, and some bizarre defensive lapses, but then don't we all?

I think at least one will get through, probably Cote D'Ivoire or Tunisia.

They are improving fast but seem to lack any idea of how to finish clinically.

It seems like the World Cup is full of Elvis Hmmonds. As soon as they get within sight of goal they want to break the net.

Thierry Henry, Gary Lineker, Ian Wright, Jimmy Greaves, Michael Owen at his best are the people they need to watch and copy. People who simply do what is required to put the ball in the net and concentrate first on foremost on being accurate.

The other thing is the crossing. Someone, somewhere has said a good cross has to be high and around the penalty area. For a start, few players seem able to accomplish that simple task but, more important, crosses should, like other passes, be properly directed and best suited to however is the intended target.

It is what sets Beckham apart and also someone like Alan Hinton. Pinpoint accuracy and with specific intent.

So many African teams seem unable to deliver a final pass from the wing.

We've seen it all season with Momo Sylla.

The African sides seem very strong and fast just like you say the end product is not there so if they could sort that out they could be more of a threat in years to come. The posotive note is that when they perform well at these world cups and get noticed by the big clubs in Europe that will add to them improving too.

I was just thinking of starting a post on this and i agree with you, i think all the teams have got proper tough groups, but one of them might go to the quaters like senegal did in 2002

i think an African team could challenge for the world cup in about 2014 or 2018 if they continue to make the same progress.

I'm most impressed with the Ivory Coast they seem strong and more so than the other African teams the ability to score goals.

I bet they'll be a couple in the premiership next year like Diouf and Diao in 2002

Well, you guys have the dough to make that happen.

I predict Chelsea to be the first European club ever to field an All-African team at the start of the 2006/07 season.

I think their strategy' like most of the big clubs is to have someone from different Countries / Continents if they can afford ooops find them. It helps with the merchandising.

Ivory Coast looked very good and i hope they get into the knock-out stages. Almost fully concentrated on attacking and not scared of a 'bigger' team. Great pace to the game and i think they could be last WC's South Korea taking a few casualties on the way... although they'll have to sort out their shooting! Talk about rush of blood to their heads.

I think all of the so called 'lesser' teams have performed magnificently, unlike in previous WC, where they have played very cagey defensive football, they have come and played free flowing footy!!

Zokora whoa Zokora whoa

He comes from Cote d'Ivoire,

he plays for the Leicest-ah

Wishful thinking.

Are you the poet laureate in disguise?

African teams have been a joy to watch, their maybe too attacking at times which is great to watch. I havn't seen a bad game yet with an African team in

Then along comes all Europe games like France v Switzerland, England and Holland games and their not as good to watch as neutrals

Part of the reason they are so good to watch is because they ARE attacking. I just wish they could finish a few of their moves and really show the way forward.
