Deco Appeal

Do they have a chance? I never saw the incident myself.

Portugal have not given up hope of having Deco at their disposal for the quarter final meeting with England.

The gifted schemer was one of four players shown red cards during Portugal's 1-0 win over Holland on Sunday.

The dismissal looked harsh in the extreme and coach Luiz Felipe Scolari is likely to ask the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) to lobby Fifa to overturn referee Valentin Ivanov's initial ruling.

"The Federation could send a letter to Fifa because of the first yellow card," said Scolari.

"The ball was ours, we had possession, but the Dutch player was told by his coach to continue playing.

"There should be fair-play guidelines from Fifa, the time has come for Fifa to think about this."

Even though Deco's second card seemed harsh and that Scolari felt the first caution should not have been given due to the Dutch failing to return the ball to Portugal, the tackle on Johnny Heitinga was nasty and Fifa are most unlikely to change the initial ruling.

No chance!

They should be thankful that Figo isn't being banned for 1 match

He should have gone for the first one.

So what if they should have knocked it back, it doesn't mean you can hack someone down!

They'll let him off though so they have more chance of knocking us out.

forget it , no way this will be overturned . 1st 1 cynical tackle and 2nd 1 he was clearly timewasting by not giving the ball back

There is no rule stating that the dutch had to give the ball back, fair enough they should've but they didn't Deco went and chased his amn out of frustration and hacked him down, which isn't allowed.

Sounds like a big fat NO then :D

Portugal fail in Deco appeal bid

Deco is shown his second yellow card by referee Ivanov

Midfielder Deco will miss Portugal's quarter-final with England after Fifa dashed any hopes of appealing against his dismissal in the game with Holland.

Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari asked Portugal's Football Federation to appeal against Deco's first caution.

But Fifa communications director Markus Siegler said: "There was a phone call, they were clearly told 'forget it'."

Deco, one of four players sent off in the stormy second round tie, will serve a one-match ban.

It was a laughable appeal and the right decision has been made

606: Have your say

The Barcelona midfielder was shown two yellow cards by referee Valentin Ivanov - the first for a foul on Dutch defender Johnny Heitinga and the second for delaying the game.

Portugal's midfield will also be missing Costinha, who was one of a World Cup record-breaking four players dismissed in the match.

Scolari accepted the two yellow cards shown to Costinha, the first for a tackle on Philip Cocu and the second for deliberate handball.

But Luis Figo will be able to face England after Fifa decided to take no further action on the yellow card shown to him for headbutting Mark van Bommel.

Not even Scolari could get the rules changed.

Maybe he's a little scared of us? :o:rolleyes:

What a joke did they seriously think it was going to get rescinded. Good for us though 1 less cheating diver to play against, shame Figo's allowed to play after that disgraceful headbutt.
