Daggers Posted 30 June 2006 Posted 30 June 2006 How do Germany do it? How they do it, won't somebody tell? If only we knew it, how Germany do it, you can bet... ...we'd be doing it as well.
Swedging Posted 30 June 2006 Posted 30 June 2006 Lack of imagination, I reckon. It was quite funny/horrifying when the Italian who missed one of penalties at Italia 90 was describing it on the Football Stories programme a few weeks back. After everyone else had refused, the manager told him he had to do it - a defender who never took penalties. He said during the walk to the spot he was starting to float, everything was moving and he wasn't sure that he'd make it to the spot, but the goal was getting smaller and smaller. And just remember the Swiss. They were all terrified.

Nationwider Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 Lehmann was briefed before each individual penalty on that particular kicker. They seem to have rock-solid mental belief in themselves. They obviously practice penalties. They don't then take them like frail, old women.

If we were 1-0 down we'd have to go for it, 10 men or not so why not go for it anyway. History tells us that we are more likely to lose a penalty shoot out, at best you have a 50/50 chance and it's often in the hands of the ref and how the oppo play it. Pychologically they had the upper hand. I'd sooner go out on a glorious attempt at winning it in normal time, just think of the pleasure we'd have got from beating them in open play with 10 men.

Durnerz Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 I think its a combination of reasons as to why we can't seem to win a penalty shootout. The English mentality is usually focused on the negative aspects of the situation when it comes to something like Penalties, Ricardo is well known for saving them and that was shown in Euro 2004, that must have been in the minds of some of the takers, plus the sheer exhaustion not just on the body, but on the mind as well. Imagine how hard you have to concentrate out there when you're playing with 11 let alone 10 to a system. Some of it is down to bottle but I don't think yesterday any player really bottled it and took a shocker of a penalty, the majority were well hit and well saved as oppose to the likes of Vassell and Batty in previous tournaments. It will happen someday but where the Germans are concerned I think the genuine belief that they have and the confidence of being in their own nation carries them through, plus you would expect Jens Lehmann to save a few so that gives more confidence.

I believe that to be greater if you deliberately set out to defend, attacking will be more exhilerating and uplifting and put you in a more positive frame of mind when you take your penalties.

Steven Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 They lost to Czechoslovakia in a penalty shoot-out in Euro '76. That would have been West Germany.
Ultra Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 It doesn't help when two Liverpool players, who should be well used to penalty shootouts, bottle their spotkicks when playing for England!
