The People's Hero Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 ... but wants to continue playing for England.
City_4_Life Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 Just seen it on SSN, he had tears in is eyes when he was reading his statement, i feel gutted for him and all the players.
Jay Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 oh well he's been a sh it captain one of the worst for many years!! only kept it for so long because of the sponsors!!
Libertine Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 It's quite sad, but I feel it's the right decision. I hope Gerrard is chosen as the new captain, we really should build a team around him.
macbeth Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 It's quite sad, but I feel it's the right decision. I hope Gerrard is chosen as the new captain, we really should build a team around him. agreed gerrard is the best option both inspirationally and tactically
Stevosevic Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 shit captain and one of the most over-rated players i have ever seen. we wont miss him.
loza15 Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 shit captain and one of the most over-rated players i have ever seen. we wont miss him. Hope thats not pointed at Gerrard Gerrard should be captain, after all he had one of the better world cups. Other candidates: Owen (We dont want him but he always seems to get the armband) Neville (Say no more...NO!) Terry (I wont be pis sed off if hes captain) Rooney (Wouldnt that be funny)
Tommeh Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 Thanks Beckham and well done been a top captain in a different way to many, sad to see him go but hopes he can play in euro 2008
The People's Hero Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 Beckham has taken a lot of unnecessary stick. The fact is, he's just not the right man to play on the right.
Ultra Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 terry for skipper !! Agreed. Beckham's decision is two years too late...

Terry (I wont be pis sed off if hes captain) Rooney (Wouldnt that be funny) it was for Beckham
Ricey Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 I've got a lot of time for Beckham, he was a great captain for us. He was patriotic and passionate while remaining mature and level headed. I really respect him stepping down also because the time is right to start a fresh. Gerrard should not be captain!! You only have to look at his passionless performance yestersday and the way he buckled under pressure from the penalty spot, hardly a captains performance. It has to go to John Terry, someone who leads by example and is a true leader.

Ricey Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 did john terry step up to the plate No because he was injured. I can guarentee you he would of took one if asked though.
1884 Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 No because he was injured. I can guarentee you he would of took one if asked though. How can you guarentee it?
Jay Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 How can you guarentee it? because he says... Be the first to say we can when others say we can't Be one step ahead, never half a yard behind Be quick to dig in when others bail-out Be firm but always fair Be proud but never arrogant Be the fastest when you can, or the smartest when you can't Be who you are not who they tell you to be Be the best you can be Be a King..."
Ricey Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 How can you guarentee it? ...because he's that kind of players, he wouldn't chicken out of something like that. When Lampard missed you saw Gerrard turn away and nearly burst into tears, a potential captain would of stayed positive and calm knowing he had to go up there and take one. Instead he walked up looking under-confident/scared and delivered a medium power shot that was just the right height for any keeper to save.
Mort Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 It's a shame i dont know if he ever should have been skipper but he's always done his bit for the country off the pitch (excluding Loose !) and been competant on the pitch... if anything he was let down by Sven's favouritism towards him. Terry or Gerrard for Skipper now then and I dont care which their both great IMHO.
Tommeh Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 Stepping down must have been so hard for him, he only wants whats best for the country everyone should respect him for that
