Stevosevic Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 best thing taylor ever did in my opinion really? i think Beckham was an awful captain and extremely over-rated. As a player i would probably not be motivated by someone who was more concerned about his hair + modelling than he was about England.
Ricey Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 really? i think Beckham was an awful captain and extremely over-rated. As a player i would probably not be motivated by someone who was more concerned about his hair + modelling than he was about England. Beckham was not more bothered about modelling and his hair more than England, that's a lazy minded comment. Beckham is respected highly in the England camp due to his passion and patriotic nature.
Knighton Matt Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 because he says... Be the first to say we can when others say we can't Be one step ahead, never half a yard behind Be quick to dig in when others bail-out Be firm but always fair Be proud but never arrogant Be the fastest when you can, or the smartest when you can't Be who you are not who they tell you to be Be the best you can be Be a King..."
NFFC Chris Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 John Terry please,he's more vocal than Gerrard and is more of a natrual leader.
davieG Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 I think it's the right thing to do although with a new manager I wouldn't have thought it was his decision anyway.
Suffolk_fox Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 I can't fault Beckham for his passion, patriotism and dedication to his role as Captain. He has been inspirational and a great captain. HOWEVER... I think that basing a squad around him and his fantastic (but one dimensional) skill of being v accurate at striking the ball was always a mistake. We need a captain like John Terry, and we need to base our team around someone who can win the ball, keep it and do something with it other than lump it upfield to a single unsupported striker.
Bert Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 Hope thats not pointed at Gerrard Gerrard should be captain, after all he had one of the better world cups. Other candidates: Owen (We dont want him but he always seems to get the armband) Neville (Say no more...NO!) Terry (I wont be pis sed off if hes captain) Rooney (Wouldnt that be funny) It was only ever Owen because that's what Sven wanted because of his "experience" Gary Neville shouldn't get it but he has good leadership qualities. I doubt it will be Gerrard because against Ecudor, the armband was passed to JT who i think is best for the job. Last but not least, Becks has been an amazing captain and ambassador for english football, and he has took a lot of undeserved stick. Just listen to what other players (and not just team-mates) have to say about him. Well done Becks i hope to see you carry on playing for England for a few more years to come.

I also think he has been a great captain, and he gets a lot of stick because whenever the team do bad it always seems to come down to him. I felt sorry for him in the press conference when he was about to break down in tears, and it shows he has great passion for his country.
Head Honcho Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 WTF was that all about? Crying and blubbering during his retirement speech
Ricey Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 WTF was that all about? Crying and blubbering during his retirement speech ...maybe because he's gutted to be stepping down and gutted England are out the World Cup?
foxesfan69 Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 WTF was that all about? Crying and blubbering during his retirement speech **** hell give the bloke a chance, he's gave his all for England and finally realised he wasn't up to the job of captain so he's stepped down. So pack giving him a hard time!

Craig Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 Whatever happens, Beckhams been a great captain for us. All english players look up to him. And when we've needed a spark most... Greece, Ecuador, Argentina etc etc. And even if you think he's been an awful captain, handing it over must be one of the hardest things ever. So to those of you that don't rate him, at least give the guy a bit of credit and respect for that if nothing else, he deserves that much. He can't help whether he's a fashion icon or not, and if he is, that makes him more of a national icon IMO, but what he can help is how good a captain he is, and he was **** brilliant. And last night he showed that, at the end of full time he was running about the pitch (injured) talking to players, at half time of extra time he was doing the same, and at full time of extra time he was doing the same too.
loza15 Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 If Gerrard is not a true captain and has no passion, how the hell does he almost single handidly pull Liverpool back from a 3 - 0 deficit to win on penalties. Dont no if you saw the match when Gerrard was given the armband for the last 10 minutes, as soon as he got the ball he was driving forward like he does for Liverpool. He was not played in his correct position. Hopefully Steve Mac will see sence and play 442 diamond with Hargreaves and Lennon playing for the first qualifiying match for EURO 2008.
Guest Gist Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 I think he has been a great captain put aside him under performing at times and being over rated but now was the right time to step down and hand it to someone else it could'nt have been easy for him so credit to him for that I think.
Nationwider Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 He learnt his lesson in '98 and bounced back to become a decent captain for England. He should do the sensible thing now and retire completely from international football with his reputation intact. Nasser Hussain quit the captaincy of England's cricket team after a century and with his team winning matches. He realised that sooner or later Andrew Strauss would take his place, so he jumped before he was pushed. Beckham should do the same - Lennon and Hargreaves will be pushing hard for regular places now. Time to go.
Shum Posted 7 July 2006 Posted 7 July 2006 John Terry for me please. If Neville was younger he could do it too, I like his attitude. "While I am still playing football, I will always be available for England" "I'll never retire from International football" etc.

Daggers Posted 7 July 2006 Posted 7 July 2006 Beckham should do the same - Lennon and Hargreaves will be pushing hard for regular places now. Time to go. ...but to Newcastle???
Nationwider Posted 7 July 2006 Posted 7 July 2006 ...but to Newcastle??? He won't get out of bed for a measly £120k p/w.
The People's Hero Posted 7 July 2006 Posted 7 July 2006 He won't get out of bed for a measly £120k p/w. And neither should he, that's a pittance.
