Steven Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 Brian Barwick thinks Sven was a success. Source Football Association chief executive Brian Barwick has hailed Sven Goran Eriksson's England managership as 'very impressive'.The Swede's five-and-a-half year tenure concluded as England's World Cup bid ended in characteristically glorious failure with a quarter final penalty shoot-out defeat to Portugal. Eriksson has been the butt of occasional criticism from some quarters with regard to perceived tactical aberrations but Barwick has defended the Swede's record. Barwick believes Eriksson has fulfilled the primary objective of all England incumbents and that despite failing to lead his side beyond the quarter finals of a major international tournament at the third time of asking. "I think the England coach has to qualify for major tournaments," Barwick told Sky Sports News. "We've seen in the last three weeks what England in a major tournament is all about. It's about 30 million people at home sitting in their armchairs, in the pub or in parks getting absolutely galvanised by major tournaments and that's where England should be. "We succeeded in qualifying for three tournaments - I've been around long enough to remember World Cups when England weren't there. "So that's a positive and then we need to get through group stages - we've done that. Then we've hit a brick wall with the quarter final but of course you have to get through the last 16s to get there.'' Asked if he believed England had progressed under Eriksson's stewardship, Barwick did concede the side could have gone further this summer. "I'll leave football experts to decide that, my view is that we're always trying to make progress and we leave Germany feeling that we've left a little bit early," he added. "Sven's done fantastically well, I've enjoyed his company - I've been in this job 18 months but I knew him before then. "He's been a very good coach for England. He's had the respect of the players and the coaching staff and I wish him well. His record is very impressive." Barwick also backed incoming England manager Steve McClaren to capitalise on his experience of working with the former Sampdoria coach. "I'm waiting to see what happens. But I believe Steve will have got the value out of being around the players for a long time," added Barwick. "This is his third major tournament, he's been around these players a long time."
Ultra Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 He's a complete d!ckhead. But what do you expect from someone who thinks McClaren's better than MON?..
Thracian Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 Barwick probably believes Bill Shankly was a Martian. Perhaps Barwick and Blatter should book a holiday together - if only to decide who comes out with the best fictional diarrhea. I gather it's warm around the North Korean nuclear test site just now!
Manwell Pablo Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 He has a point in regards to us having at least qualfied for the last three major tournaments, In that regard it could of been ( and will be in the future ) alot worse. However how Barwick can say Sven has done "fantastically well" is beyond me, "fantastically well" is winning a majour tournament or at least getting to the final. Its probabley just the FA's way of attempting to nullyfiy all the rubbish the tabloids will come out with. When all is said and done he performed averagely, reaching the latter stages of three major tournaments, bottling it when things get really serious.

So why are you involved in the selection of the England Manager if you can't judge whether we've made progress. But it doesn't matter, nothing does as long as you've enjoyed his company FFS
Ric Flair Posted 3 July 2006 Posted 3 July 2006 Sven was a success compared to what we'll experience under MaClaren.
Gamesmaster Posted 3 July 2006 Posted 3 July 2006 ""Sven's done fantastically well" Must be time for a revolution. How can we, the one's who finance the FA, take over it? We need to vote in the England manager. And vote him out when we want.
Daggers Posted 3 July 2006 Posted 3 July 2006 If we are all agreed that the FA are a corrupt bunch of assholes that couldn't organise a fukc in a brothel then it is the enemy of my enemy time... There's nothing the big clubs would like more than to crush the might of the FA - and I think it is about time they did.
