stez Posted 4 July 2006 Posted 4 July 2006 So there IS justice in football... I can go to sleep in peace tonight... How beautiful and calming that is... italy won though!
MC Prussian Posted 4 July 2006 Posted 4 July 2006 italy won though! Slight correction: The better team has won.
martyn Posted 4 July 2006 Posted 4 July 2006 Great game. I would quite like to have seen the Germans win the tournament but Italy were just about deserving winners. Cannavaro simply outstanding.
Alexikokopops Posted 4 July 2006 Posted 4 July 2006 italy won though! I was actually thinking about this, Italy haven't dived all that much in comparison to other teams, it's just they had the noteable one against Australia. Fr'instance in the Portugal-Holland match every player rolled half the pitch whenever an opposition player came within 2 foot of them. And I can't think of many occasions where the whole team's surrounded the ref brandishing imaginary cards, or purposely gone to the ref to get a player sent off (C.Ronaldo), or congratulated him afterwards (like the dutch players did fr'instance).
martyn Posted 4 July 2006 Posted 4 July 2006 Portugal are the scummiest team in the last 4 by a distance.
Swedging Posted 4 July 2006 Posted 4 July 2006 Truly excellent game. Neither side was into cheating - something of a miracle given the teams. The Italians played beautifully, as they only sometimes do. Defence was as elegant as ever, but the change of pace to attack was divine - a true lesson on how to build a team around the defence,

The Germans did their fair share tonight not that is particularly bad - what was Ballack holding his head for? I can see him making the customary contribution to Chelsea next season
Thracian Posted 5 July 2006 Posted 5 July 2006 Some proper football, a brilliant referee who let the game flow instead of wanting centre-stage himself and the perfect reaction when you get ahead - defend normally and counter with speed, skill, determination and support. Seemed a bit stange seeing the Germans singing the Liverpool Anthem You'll Never Walk Alone afterwards and waving their scarves in imitation of the Scousers. Overall, despite my long, long lasting contempt for all things German I do think they have conveyed through the football that they seem to be succeeding in re-inventing their nation - or is that illusion and me getting soft as I face the prospect of having a truly lovely American/German daughter in law?. Glad the Italians won. Their country might be a seemingly permanent cesspit of corruption but in my experience of working and holidaying there, they are smashing fun-loving, generous and family-minded people whose team fully deserved deserved to win a match which was a treat to watch. Where that leaves football though, with the nation's game in disgrace, I'm not quite sure... Probably thinking our own corruption scandals won't be far behind when they are finally revealed.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 5 July 2006 Posted 5 July 2006 Game of the tournament for me. Really had the feel of a World Cup semi-final. The look of it reminded me of the 1982 semi for some reason.
Nationwider Posted 5 July 2006 Posted 5 July 2006 I'm really annoyed I missed it. The highlights were good though. Italy v France would make a good final on Saturday.
