Leicester Lass Posted 6 July 2006 Posted 6 July 2006 BBC Wigan's £5.5m Heskey bid accepted Wigan are set to break their transfer record after a £5.5m bid for Birmingham striker Emile Heskey was accepted. A statement on Birmingham's website confirmed the offer had been agreed for the 28-year-old former England player, who is now discussing personal terms. Wigan manager Paul Jewell also inquired about signing Robbie Savage, 31, from Blackburn but was told the Wales midfielder was not for sale. Jewell said the club were targeting "top Premiership performers". Wigan are desperate to land a proven striker after selling Jason Roberts to Blackburn for £3m and missing out in the chase for Andrew Johnson, who joined Everton from Crystal Palace in May. Their previous record transfer fee was the £3.1m paid to Wolves for Henri Camara last summer. Jewell said: "Emile is a proven performer at Premiership and international level and we have made what we consider to be a very good offer to Birmingham City. "It is not normal for this club to comment on targets until the player has signed but in this instance it's an open secret that we've made the bid. "I think he's a player who could do very well for us but we'll see how the situation develops. "I'm still very confident we will get the five or six new players we want by the beginning of the season."
Thracian Posted 6 July 2006 Posted 6 July 2006 Now he is one "old boy" I wish really was coming back.
Head Honcho Posted 6 July 2006 Posted 6 July 2006 Well done Brum and Emile £5.5 Million is well over what he's worth! Ask em if they'll pay treble over the odds for De Vries, they're bound to have £20 lying around somewhere
Leicester Lass Posted 6 July 2006 Author Posted 6 July 2006 Apparently they've tried to sign Sav as well but he's 'not for sale' according to blackburn.
nhfox Posted 6 July 2006 Posted 6 July 2006 If Wigan has all this money, why don't they buy one good striker rather than a bunch of mediocre ones? Surely it would be wiser to spend 8.5m on one top striker rather than Heskey and Connolly?

Maybe you're right but they wont go there, also what if this £8.5 mill player got injured first game of the season?
Guest Gist Posted 6 July 2006 Posted 6 July 2006 £5.5 Mill is rather extreme instead os splashing that sort of money on him why don't they pay much less for other established strikers who will get you goals.
Libertine Posted 6 July 2006 Posted 6 July 2006 I still think Heskey could be a valuable player in the Premiership, as long as he has a manager that can motivate him and play to his style, whether Jewell is that man I don't know.
Guest Gist Posted 6 July 2006 Posted 6 July 2006 I think he can still do a job too just that at that much he is overpriced.
Libertine Posted 6 July 2006 Posted 6 July 2006 what about conners future now? Back-up still I reckon. Heskey and Camara will be first choice.
SystonFox Posted 7 July 2006 Posted 7 July 2006 oh yeah heskey and camara should be a good partnership. imo. but now we're laughing even further and harder to the bank. 3 million for a striker who is back up and all because he netted one hat trick vs a mediocre championship team. lmao

NFFC Chris Posted 7 July 2006 Posted 7 July 2006 Well Birmingham will be laughing all the way to the bank after Wigan have paid at least double his worth! If Heskey is worth £5.5 million then Nathan Tyson is worth £10 million.
Libertine Posted 7 July 2006 Posted 7 July 2006 They're apparently getting Nathan Ellington back from West Brom along with Zoltan Gera for £10m.
SystonFox Posted 7 July 2006 Posted 7 July 2006 -His goal record at Wimbledon -and his general improvement towards the end with us had nothing to do with it then? first comment, that was a long time ago and a goal record for a championship team proves nothing when he'd never played in the prem. his improvement towards t he end with us was the fact he mainly scored penaltys. the only class he showed was against Stoke at the start of last season and that got his name in the spotlight for a while and Wigan were stupid enough to pay 3million for him. he is not a prem quality s triker.
Maybes Posted 8 July 2006 Posted 8 July 2006 You are right he is not premiership quality. But i would take him back.

Fair enough, but I doubt it was just the hat trick I will always remember his goal against QPR.
Daggers Posted 9 July 2006 Posted 9 July 2006 I still think Heskey could be a valuable player in the Premiership, as long as he has a manager that can motivate him and play to his style, whether Jewell is that man I don't know. He was PATHETIC last season for Brum. He ran less than an overweight schoolgirl during a PE class, and was about as useful up front. His positional sense, control and passing were woeful ~ and his ability to hit the target was as absent as tactical nouse from Sven's brain. If he can't accept a decent level of responsibility to motivate himself to run and score (as a highly paid Premier league player) then he deserves a slap ~ not a new club. Heskey was given good service from the right flank and still failed to capitalise on it. I suggest he'll not be making Premier defenses nervous this season either. A decent season in the Championship would have done wonders for his confidence, and shown some loyalty by repaying the faith shown in him. But no. He took the first opoortunity to jump ship and line his pocket.
