Suffolk_fox Posted 3 September 2006 Posted 3 September 2006 The Mrs and I have decided that next year, we will buy an inter rail ticket, which is valid for 1 month and just go round Europe, visiting all the sights and cities we can. Has anyone else on the site done this, and can offer any advice, tips or stories?
andrewsnaith Posted 3 September 2006 Posted 3 September 2006 I've never done that but it sounds like a excellent idea and wouldnt mind trying it myself. Do you have to use certain transport or can you use any train company you like? How much did it cost?
Suffolk_fox Posted 3 September 2006 Author Posted 3 September 2006 Up to 400 quid depending on your age and where you want to go. Click here
Knighton Matt Posted 3 September 2006 Posted 3 September 2006 The Mrs and I have decided that next year, we will buy an inter rail ticket, which is valid for 1 month and just go round Europe, visiting all the sights and cities we can. Has anyone else on the site done this, and can offer any advice, tips or stories? Yeah did it a few summers ago with 3 mates and I have to say you're making a wise choice it was one of the best holidays I ever had. So much to see and do. We took in the following locations... Milan Verona Venice Lake Garda Innsbruck Vienna Prague Utrecht Amsterdam Not bad for a month's holiday! My advice is not to buy the inter rail ticket if you're price concious. We actually got cheap flights to Italy with ryanair and picked a leaving destination (Amsterdam) for a month later and booked another cheap flight to get us home. Paying for the travel in between as and when we needed it didn't amount to £400 and we weren't restricted about where and when we went. However if you'd rather have the convenience of the all in ticket then by all means go for it. It's worth checking the restrictions carefully though as they can limit the times at which can you travel which could be inconvenient.
Head Honcho Posted 3 September 2006 Posted 3 September 2006 I think KM's idea is a good one for anyone over 26. I've tinkered with the idea a few times but the missus isn't too keen on living out of a suitcase for a month.
Cat Burger Posted 3 September 2006 Posted 3 September 2006 No, someone put drugs in my bag on a train in Croatia and I got sent down for 20 years, it was terrible.

Rincewind Posted 3 September 2006 Posted 3 September 2006 It's something I thought abot/ But now I think I've left it too late Being single I should have done it a few years agp. Now my job, the hassle of dragging luggage around with me and fitness or lack of would put me off. I'd say go for it.
DaveyJ Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 The Mrs and I have decided that next year, we will buy an inter rail ticket, which is valid for 1 month and just go round Europe, visiting all the sights and cities we can. Has anyone else on the site done this, and can offer any advice, tips or stories? Did it this summer with 5 mates. Definitely worth doing. We did - Amsterdam Berlin Krakow Budapest Novy Smokavec (Slovakian countryside) Prague Brno (Czech Rep's second city) Vienna Venice Verona Rome Interlaken Milan (managed to see AC Milan vs Red Star Belgrade only €10 ) Nice/Monaco Paris We booked flights to Amsterdam and from Paris and that was it. The flexibility is great, we just rang ahead to hostels and most of the time that worked out fine; in any case we always had somewhere to stay although Nice ended up costing about €10 more than anywhere else for a night. I would recommend getting the Lonely Planet Europe on a shoe string (purple cover) because it has almost every where in with the best stuff to do and places to stay etc. In fact we rarely used the official hostels but used their recomendations instead. From our trip I would say definitely go to Rome and is your interested in going in to the countrside Interlaken is great. Hope thats helpful

cisono Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 The Mrs and I have decided that next year, we will buy an inter rail ticket, which is valid for 1 month and just go round Europe, visiting all the sights and cities we can. Has anyone else on the site done this, and can offer any advice, tips or stories? I have done this twice. Once I started off from Italy, going up to Vienna, Prague, Berlin, Denmark (Copenhagen, Odense, Jutland), France (Paris, Poitiers, Cannes, Monaco), Switzerland, Austria, Vienna, Slovakia and back to Italy. The second time I started off from Holland, travelled to Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany (Frankfurt, Saarbruecken), Switzerland (Canton Ticino) and Italy. In other words, I visited lots of friends in small places as well as large cities in countries I fancied for whatever reason. We slept at friends', on trains, in parks and rarely in hostels or fields (watch out for heavy machinery). Both times, it took me about two weeks to recover from the exhaustion (due to lack of sleep) and several weeks to recover some of the weight I'd lost walking around all day carrying my rucksack!
cisono Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 Has anyone else on the site done this, and can offer any advice, tips or stories? Oh yes, watch out for people in your train compartment. For various reasons: - once I found out that two Finnish guys that had been talking to us and sharing a compartment with us actually had drugs in their boots when we passed customs (of course, we had no idea and were in no way connected with their illegal activities) - This will come as no surprise to lookwhaticando but... when I inter-railed alone, I found myself having a pillow fight with 5 previously-unknown people who just happened to share the same sleeping compartment
