Guest Posted 6 October 2006 Posted 6 October 2006 Which way?? Angry that I'm being really pedantic, and shouldn't be moaning about such trivial things? Or; the fact that the English language is just so misunderstood, by those that use it on a regular basis? The second one. It makes me mad.
stez Posted 6 October 2006 Posted 6 October 2006 The second one. It makes me mad. that should read: the seccund-en, it mecks me mad
Rincewind Posted 6 October 2006 Posted 6 October 2006 This isn't Lestah but I've found it in a book that I have. I like the English Language and the different dialects. Yo'd rayther see mi plucked an nak'd, Shiverin' at yer breath; As soft as muck, like bread awl-baked, An' as lily-white as death. If Ah'm a cock, mi feathers shine - Yer whooas pride is forbidden? Answer! Is id thine? Or mine? Who were id built this midden? What is a midden?

Can anyone guess the region? Or translate? What is a midden? Midden
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, searchA midden, or kitchen midden, is a dump for domestic waste. The word is of Scandinavian via Middle English derivation but is used by archaeologists worldwide to describe any kind of feature containing waste products relating to day-to-day human life. They may be convenient, single-use tips created by nomadic groups or long-term, designated dumps used by several generations. In the latter case, a midden's stratigraphy can become apparent. Animal bone, faeces, shell, rotten food, vermin, broken pottery and other artifacts and ecofacts can all find their way into middens and they therefore provide a useful resource for archaeologists who wish to study the diet and habits of past societies. Middens with damp, anaerobic conditions can preserve even delicate environmental remains and can be analysed for information regarding climate and seasonal use. The East Chisenbury midden is a famous example of a large dump, dating to the 1st millennium BC. Sited on Salisbury Plain in the United Kingdom, the midden mound contains discrete layers upon layers of flint, charcoal, bones, pottery and excrement. It survives to a height of 2.5m and measures 140m in width despite 2,500 years of weathering. The accumulation is believed by some archaeologists to have a ritual basis, with organised deposition of produce and waste being suggested as an explanation for its size and longevity. The word "midden" is still in everyday use in Scotland, and has come by extension, to refer to anything that is a mess, including people. In West Yorkshire a midden is an outdoor toilet, typically in the back yards of terraced houses. Often attached to this small building is an outhouse which houses dustbins.
lookwhaticando Posted 6 October 2006 Posted 6 October 2006 I think we've strayed from written English (as Phube was complaining about) to verbal English and it's many dialects. Though local dialects appear to take the piss when it comes to spelling and grammar, you don't write like that. Let's get back on topic... (there's another one... use and abuse of the ' character).
lcfcalan Posted 6 October 2006 Posted 6 October 2006 Spelling mistakes/typos , good fun generally. The word that bugs me which is in common use is 'are' instead of the word 'our' . Just today I received an e-mail from a senior manager that began , 'Please transfer the following goods to are depot, are driver will collect them this afternoon. '

It's fine if you say it as "are" that's more a dialect thing than a spelling/grammar issue... but when it's typed.

Tsk. If this is true, Tim Davies should be shot. Our reputation as chavs is bad enough already!

Don't think Tim should be shot unless he made the signs himself. Someone's cocked up, though, and they should put it right - by taking some bloody English classes.

Ultra Posted 16 October 2006 Posted 16 October 2006 Don't think Tim should be shot unless he made the signs himself. Surely he'd have them checked out before posting them?
lookwhaticando Posted 16 October 2006 Posted 16 October 2006 Surely he'd have them checked out before posting them? I think signage isn't a top priority of the CEO. Keeping us solvent is his top priority. I'd suggest some underling responsible for signage, PR and/or marketing would be to blame for that. It should be there duty to rectify it, too. We should email Tim, highlighting the problem, and see who he assigns to fix it. Of course, he might not assign anyone to fix it as fixing it would certainly cost money - and money is something he's responsible for.

Stuliasz Posted 3 November 2006 Posted 3 November 2006 How many people on this board haven't even reached the level of school where they know the difference yet? Its shocking I say!
Manwell Pablo Posted 3 November 2006 Posted 3 November 2006 How many people on this board haven't even reached the level of school where they know the difference yet? Its shocking I say! I think they're is already a topic on this.
lookwhaticando Posted 3 November 2006 Posted 3 November 2006 How many people on this board haven't even reached the level of school where they know the difference yet? Its shocking I say! They reached the 'level' but were never effectively taught the difference. The way the education system teaches the core subjects is not all that great, sadly. I think they're is already a topic on this.
